I turned and James turned with me when we heard his voice, "I need to have a word with Amn Hoskins." He said as James tightened his grip. I looked up to James confused, but he kept eye contact with LT. To my horrific surprise when I looked back, Anthony kept the same look with him. Both males stood frozen in a dominating staring contest as LT said again, "A1C James, I need to have a word with Amn Hoskins. Now." Still, James didn't move and niether did Anthony. They reminded me of two cobras curled up to strike and I was the frightened rabbit in the middle of it. They stayed locked in a testosterone challenge until James's hand slid down from my arm.
"I'll see you back at the dorms." James said as he disappeared through the doors. Walking up to LT I said, "What was that about?" He looked down at me like he had forgotten I was there, "What was what about?" I looked back through the exit, "Oh I don't know, how about the fact that it looked like you two were about to go to blows in a second?" He shrugged, "I have no idea what you mean. But I do need to have a word with you if you don't mind." I nodded as we went outside into the warm desert breeze. Everyone was leaving, getting in their cars to go home and enjoy their weekend. LT and I walked around the side of the building into the moon light.
"I didn't know it was a full moon tonight." I said staring up at the beautiful sight in the sky. He glanced up and mumbled something I couldn't hear. He brought me to the side of the building furthest from the party and stood there with his back to me. I allowed my eyes to dance down him as I admired how handsome he looked in a suit and tie. Surely he brought me here to tell me his feelings for me. I waited expectantly as he took a breath and said, "I think I need to stay away from you for a while." I froze as he nodded, "It's clear that you've started to develop feelings for me. Although I think you are an attractive, sweet girl, I can not allow our relationship to be anything, but professional."
"I don't understand." I said as memories of the times we had spent together flashed through my head. Us laughing together, staying way past office hours to talk about life, spending the past five hours dancing on air. Surely he must have felt something too, it couldn't have been all me. He turned and looked at me in an almost patronizing stare, "Look, you're a beautiful girl, but officer and enlisted don't belong together. I'm sorry." I stood frozen as a statue while he walked past me. The memories kept flashing through me when I heard him open his car door and get in. I heard him pull out and just as I turned to watch him leave, my world was shaken by the sound of crushed metal.
"Anthony!" I screamed as the second driver slammed into his car so hard it made it do a 360. I watched almost in slow motion as his head smashed against the windshield and glass shattered everywhere. People started to flood out because of the noise, asking what happened. I couldn't hear them, all I could do was stand there in shock. He wasn't moving, Anthony wasn't moving. My feet moved without my permission as my black heels clicked against the pavement. "Anthony!" I screamed again as I took off to the wreck. Suddenly someone grabbed my arm and pulled me back as sergeant Shawn said, "No Hoskins!" I tried to fight him, make him let me go, "Let me go! I have to save him! He's hurt!"
"No Hoskins! We don't know if the car will explode. His engine has been hit too, it could set off a fire. Someone already called the hospital." I still struggled against him, but he passed me off to Sergeant Michael who I had no hope of overpowering. Tears fell down my face as the lights and sirens from the ambulance broke the deathly silence in the night. I watch as they loaded him onto the stretcher. He was unconcious and his head was bleeding. When they pulled away Sergeant Michael let me go and Lyn slipped her arms gently around my shoulders, "Come on honey child, lets go." I was shaking as we walked past the car and I saw blood on the ground.
"I never told him Lyn."
"Told him what?"
"I never told him how much I cared for him."
