Once upon a time,
As so many stories begin,
There was a mighty bird,
Whose wings were broken in.
He fell from the sky,
Like an angel struck,
He plummented from Heaven,
His wings lined with muck.
But in this mud,
There was a girl.
With eyes like rain,
And a smile of pearls.
She lifted the bird,
As gently as one can,
Craddled him to her breasts,
An undiscovered place by any man.
He was beautiful,
Even with his dirtied wings.
His song was broken,
Though it resonated through her dreams.
For unknown to her,
Residing quite nearby,
Were his mate and chicks,
Echoing out their cries.
The girl held the bird tighter,
Resentment growing in her heart.
"He is mine, not yours."
With her angel she never wanted to part.
But the cries continued to plauge her,
Calling long into the night.
And though it broke her heart,
She knew inside what was right.
So with his wings fully healed,
She lifted him to the sky.
With a final push, she released him,
And despite herself started to cry.
But the bird circled around her,
His song more sweet than she knew,
And when he returned to his family,
She smiled too.
