Summary

The first four lines of the penultimate stanza come from the song "Are We Alright" by Show of Hands. It's my favourite song, so this poem came from those lines.

Why are you crying?
Surely your pain is not
unhealable. I've been
up for hours, but I can't
sleep unless we're alright.

Tell me what's wrong,
my love. Let me try
to fix your problems.
I'm not leaving until
I know we're alright.

Don't make me beg,
don't make me plead -
leave me with some
dignity. Just tell me
that we're alright.

Please let me help
you - I love you
and I'd die if I
lost you. Just say
that we're alright.
