After more than 70 years of war between United Earth Force and the Calvorian Alliance, peace has been achieved. With shore leave being given out to the crews of UEF's Heavy Cruisers, Travis Rand--captain of the flagship Horizon--has returned home to Earth.

But during a visit to an injured friend, Rand is forced to remember certain incidents which led to him becoming the man he is now. What makes a hero? Is it the triumphs, the tragedies, or some mix in between? Or could it be the unseen hand of destiny, which delivered a savior right when the human race needed one?

{This section of the book--actually Chapter 16 in the story--takes place during Rand's days at the Sanderson School, one of UEF's many military academies. Rand must make a life-altering decision...}
