Time has a way of letting you know

It’s about time that you changed

The face looking back from the morning glass

Can't hide it knows you’ve aged

_

Did we travel too far? O saddened grey eyes

I still can't believe you're my own

But I know what lie 'neath that downhearted gaze

Dreams of the auld path home

_

I’ve watched the day from the dark ocean floor

Seen others laugh and dance in the sun

I can't breathe water or swim with the tide

I need ground I can stand sure on

_

Like I’m sweeping up leaves on a blustery day

Gathering firewood in the pouring rain

Telling myself it’ll all be worthwhile

While I can’t see the worth for the pain

_

[chorus]

This man may find riches

Wherever he goes

But if he's not among his own

A poor life he’ll lead

Many miles from his soul

That waits down the auld path home

_

Pushed far from my centre, I've let myself be

By those who put coins in my hand

The day I realise I don't belong to a thing

Will be the day I reclaim some land

_

I’ve been using words I didn’t learn as a child

Have I let that boy’s trust be abused?

The promises I gave him now feel like keys

For doors that are no longer used

_

[chorus]

This man may find riches

Wherever he goes

But if he's not among his own

A poor life he’ll lead

Many miles from his soul

That waits down the auld path home

And there’s no use pretending

No, it would be wrong

To expect that path leads

To where I came from

Peace of mind

Was always hard to find

But if it’s there

I'm on the auld path home

_

Time has a way of letting you know

It’s easy to fall through the gap

I now understand where this searching must end

To get there I won’t need a map

_

That day when I wake to a song in this heart

Faith showing there's no great unknown

Tears in these eyes, I’ll look down to see

Feet standing on the auld path home
