Almost as soon as our history began,
With e'en the earliest family of man,
There was the birth of an ugly new plan:
Learning rehearsals of death ... of death ...
Learning rehearsals of death.

So was inflicted and so was received,
Bloodbaths and torture and horror conceived,
More so than anyone would have believed,
All those rehearsals of death ... of death ...
All those rehearsals of death.

Throughout the many millennia of time,
See how the battles and body counts climb!
There is no reason and there is no rhyme
To the rehearsals of death ... of death ...
To the rehearsals of death.

Even in recent years as man puts store
In greater knowledge than ever before,
Still they run faster to learn about war
And the rehearsals of death ... of death ...
And the rehearsals of death.

Many creators of grand, new inventions
Sadly behold how their peaceful intentions
Are soon converted for warlike conventions
For the rehearsals of death ... of death ...
For the rehearsals of death.

Many our loved ones who gave up their lives,
Leaving behind precious children and wives,
Just because someone a new war contrives
With its rehearsals of death ... of death ...
With its rehearsals of death.

Why this insanity? It makes no sense!
Can we not see what is due recompense
For all this hatred, so vile and intense,
All these rehearsals of death ... of death ...
All these rehearsals of death?

What some don’t know are the forces unseen
Who drive all those who like lemmings careen
Into the classrooms of war, which are seen
As the rehearsals of death ... of death ...
As the rehearsals of death.

But still much greater, the power above
That soon will end this great, powerful shove,
And bathe this earth in a new law of love,
Closing rehearsals of death ... of death ...
Closing rehearsals of death.

For as so many a prophet did say
That swords will soon become plowshares one day,
So it is written, and so we will say:
“Be gone, rehearsals of death ... of death!
“Be gone, rehearsals of death!”

Look! See our world without war drawing near!
No more will man view his brothers with fear,
For each of us will hold everyone dear,
Ending rehearsals of death ... of death!
Ending rehearsals of death!

And all the millions we’ve lost who have died
Soon will awake, and the tears we have cried
Will fade away and forever be dried!
No more rehearsals of death ... of death!
No more rehearsals of death!

‘Death, where’s your victory? Death, where’s your sting?’
No more will you shadow everything!
Gone you will be, and for long we will sing,
As we forever draw breath ... draw breath!
As we forever draw breath!
