Emos. By definition they are depressed teenagers who cut themselves, listen to depressing music, wear their hair coveringhalf their face, and wear skin tight clothes. Some even say they worship Satan and are all suicidal. Now, where did this trend start exactly? The U.S.? Who started it? No one really knows the answer to that. Like all trends, emo is followed in many places and the origin is questionable. But no matter where it's practiced, emo is a hated label by its rivals: the punks, goths, and metalheads. Some emos even hae the term. Most of the so-called emos  I've met all say the same thing: I never said I was emo, someone else told me I was.

Me being a pretty happy person, I was shocked when some of my closest friends told me their first thoughts about me. From Kelsey, she said that she thought I was a bitch and pretty much hated me. Libby said she thought I was depressed because of my use of black in my wardrobe. Steven said that his first thoughts were 'Man, that girl must be depressed or something.' And I'm constantly the emo of the group. Where the hell did that come from? As far as I'm concerned, this label is an insult more than it is a reality. I mean, really. What does someone around here have to do to be considered only for who they are, and not what they dress like?

Then there are the 'real emos' the ones who talk the talk (the talk being all of that 'my life is horrible, no one cares' crap) and dress the part. One group of 'emos' that I've known since middle school are just now emo this year. It's like they made the decision to be depressed because their parents don't understand them or some bull crap! Listen, NO ONE is ever going to comepletely understand you, all right? That's what makes humans so unique: their differences. You take those unique qualities aqay by portraying this label to the fullest extent when emo really doesn't exist in the first place! There are only people who like the style that decide to dress that way. Most emos aren't even that depressed. They live basically good lives and the people who really have something to complain about don't go parading it!

My friend Kaitlyn has been abused and told to give up her life comepletely until she can be emancipated to take care of her selfish siblings at home and clean up every mess made in the house. Her mother won't allow her to play sports, Vollryball these couple past years were a blessing for her. She's hardly ever allowed out of the house unless she's taking her younger brothers to the park. She is not allowed to sleep until the whole house is clean, so she has lack of sleep. Becuase of her lack of sleep, she dozes off while the dinner SHE made is devoured by the rest of her family and none is left for her. Because of her lack of sleep and lack of time for anything else but cleaning, she doesn't get much homework done and she lags in her classes, but still gets better grades than her brother (a year younger) who is praised at home. Her C is rivaled with her brother's almost failing the 8th grade and somehow, she's the one being lectured while her brother plays video games.

Her father constantly reminds her that she's not his daughter when in fact this is untrue by biological reasons. She's told me about so many other things that have happened to her which I cannot mention because she told me these things in confidence. She's only ever shared her whole life's story with three people. Me and two of her other friends who lived in Miami and Texas with her during her earlier years. All of this and still, she is a fairly happy person when she is with her friends and doesn't parade the fact that she has a bad home situation. These 'real emos' atmy school have nothing compared to what she suffers every day at home. Yet, they bring razors to school, showing them off and declare that no one cares about them when they in fact have a girlfriend/boyfriend. I've even met one of the supposed emo's family before and found them to be pretty nice.

Another thing that upsets me is the uproar in Mexico about the emos. Anti-emo rallies, emo beat downs, I can't take it! How can someone be so misunderstanding about another human being? It's racism in the form of labels. Lychings have went on in protest of emos even. All teenagers feel misunderstood and are all basically alike in one way or another, why are they turning on each other like this? We human beings are the only creatures that can think about things like race and labels, so why can't we turn it around for something positive? If we are the only beings that are capable of feelings like hate, why can't we be capable of not just tolerance like the emos in Mexico shout for, but compassion and understanding? why does it need to be 'everyone for themselves'?

In my opinion, a real emo will never really exist. There are posers who think they're emo simply because someone told them they were. There are people who like to feel free to express themselves in poetry and in the way they dress. Way back when people were appluaded for expressivness and sensetivity, Shaksphere was alive. Why can't anyone understand that there will be sensitive people who express themselves in a different fashion then the other half of society? Sure, some may dress the same, but look at you and your friends. Are you any different?
