You’re 5 years old

And mommy kisses your bruised knees

It hurts like hell for a few days

But by the next week you’re over it

Your new toy broke today

Daddy couldn’t fix it

That toy was your whole world

You feel so lost without it

Until a new toy comes along

You’re 10 years old

And mommy wipes your tears

After you fail your first test

But you pass the next one

Suddenly one F doesn’t seem so bad

Jamie doesn’t like you

And daddy can’t make that better

But the hurt doesn’t last

Once Alex joins your class

You’re 16 years old

And mommy buys you chocolate

For your aching back and tummy

And after a few days, the pain is gone

Danny broke your heart today

And daddy wishes he could fix it

But your heart doesn’t seem broken

When you meet the new kid in town

You’re 18 years old

And mommy sends you a care package

To rid the stress of college

And suddenly, life seems manageable

Nobody seems to want to be around you

And daddy wishes he could solve that problem

But it doesn’t seem so bad

When you find that one good friend

You’re 25 years old

And mommy sends you baked goods

While you unpack your apartment

Good thing you don’t have to cook now

Ted left you after being engaged

And daddy finds himself wishing again

That he could fix your broken heart

But now it doesn’t seem so bad

When a new co-worker walks in

You’re 32 years old

And mommy tells you to push

Just once more

The Doctor announces the baby is stillborn

And daddy wishes he could make it all better

But finding out seven months later

You’re pregnant again

Doesn’t seem so bad

You’re 37 years old

And now it’s your turn

To kiss bruised knees

And comfort

And buy chocolate

And make care packages

And bake goodies

And tell her to push

Just once more

And suddenly,

Everything doesn’t seem so bad.

~When we’re young, everything feels like the end of the world. Pain is amplified and mommy’s hugs and daddy’s lectures about broken hearts don’t do a damn thing. But that pain? It has ending point.~
