Meh. Something I threw together in a dark time of my life. Thank god that is over.

They sit alone. She on a tattered, plaid couch, him on the creaky wooden chair in the corner. The party goes on around them, but they don’t notice. The music blares, and people laugh. But they don’t make any move to join the rest of them. On the outside, they look act like nothing is wrong. They laugh, and smile. They joke, and love. But on the inside, a maelstrom of thoughts bombard them constantly, from the moment they wake up, to the moment their faces hit the cold pillow, and darkness rushes over them. Each day, they wonder if life is worth it. Each day they decide it is, but the pain increases.

They can’t see the light shining through the heavy cloud layer that surrounds them.  They can’t hear the birds chirping over the sound of the wind rushing past them. They can’t stop to smell the luscious red roses, for the never ending flow of time whips drags them into currents too strong for them to over come.

Across the dance floor, their eyes meet, for the briefest moment. Then the gaze is broken, and the connection lost. A friend passes by, and he smiles. She looks on with a longing smile etched on her face. She quickly puts the mask that slipped back on, hoping no one saw what’s really going on.

She gets up to leave, and he follows suit. When she gets to the bottom of the stairs, he accidently brushes against her. And for the smallest of moments, a spark of realization arcs up their spines and settles in their brains. Another second passes, and they step away, questions seared in their minds.
“Could it be true? Could someone be as confused as I am on the inside? Am I not the only one wearing a mask? Should I show them, the real me? Just take off the mask, and smash it on the floor?”
