Finally he stood at the very top of the hundred thousand steps that led up from the entrance to the Tower all the way up to the Hall of The Sword and Voice. "Ahh, heh this climb is worse than I remember, I should be more appreciative that I rarely had to make it." The climb had taken more effort than Conner would like to admit even to himself, He felt absolutely exhausted. "I guess that's why the Sentinels call it the Steps of Regret; with each step you regret the last for sapping you of more energy. I'm already running late for my own Hollowing of all thing heh, might as well take moment to catch my breath." Connor took a seat near the great timber door studded with iron rivets and lined with incantations. He leaned back on the cold and hard stone stool that he sat upon and rested his head against the wall behind him. His gaze drifted up the other wall onto an image that depicted a young knight with hair as black as night and a comely face, geared in pristine white scale armor emblazoned with the black tower of the Sentinels and wielding a peal white sword greatsword that he recognized as Whitefire the greatsword wielded by every Lord Warden since the dawn of the order.

"Hi, Conner fancy seeing you here.". The person who spoke to him was a beauty, a woman with a fiery red hair and emerald like eyes. Her face was narrow at the chin and came into a rounded tip. "Hello Roselyn". She took a seat by Conner, he could smell that she had recently bathed and smelled of lemon and dragon fruit. Her hair flowed thick and heavy yet also elegantly over her roughly stitched robe with its color of grey visibly fading. "Still a Learner huh Roselyn?" He could tell as much from her robe. In the Tower robes told you more than those who bore then, grey meant learner, black meant learned, red meant apprentice, a deep purple meant master and lastly the White robes of the Bishops, Archbishops and Grand Bishop. "Still not a Sentinel huh." her tone was cynical and harsh. " "Actually I’m going to do my Hollowing today, I mean to take my pendant and charge." She laughed. "Really? You? you're going to take a charge." Again she laughed, it burned Conner and made him half wish he could get up and go, though that he was still too weak to do. "Yes." Conner said that with a stern and annoyed tone that told her she had truly offended him, but sadly Roselyn was not the type to apologize and leave. She might have had a given name but she was more often than not called the Rose because she always smelled as pretty but was full of thorns.

Rose pointed to the Image Conner had been gazing at moments earlier, "You know what that is Little Conner?" "Yes, It's an image." Conner knew what she wanted him to say but out of spite decided to annoy her for a change. "That is an image that depicts the end of freedom." "What do you mean?" The image in truth showed the First Warden thrusting Whitefire into a figure clad in black robes adorned with strange symbols. "That's the First Warden saving the world from the evils of magic. That image depicts the end of Acolytes, the last of the freeborn mages. The figure clad in the black robes was a teacher of Acolytes; he travelled the realms helping those born with our curse." Conner had never thought of it like that before this moment. He had always been filled with stories of the bravery and vigilance of the First Warden. "That's the day it ended, that's the day freedom died." Rose's voice had grown cold and he could see a tear forming in her eye. "They hung it here to teach us that we can never outfight the all the realms." Conner never knew how to console others and hence just looked down at his hands. Rose stood up and said to Conner "Look. Tell me Little-Conner do you know what that depicts and teaches us." The image was of a Grand Bishop who had long since died, in the image he stood in a great assembly of lordly looking men and gestured as if he was speaking some great tale. "That's the first Grand Bishop." "Yes, after they were done hunting us down and putting us to the sword like the First Warden did, they decided that they should name one of us Grand Bishop and have him and his minions preach the words of their God to us. Some wanted to fight, but it never happened they were killed by their own and soon all talk of rebellion was quelled. They eventually moved us here and gave swords to those who would defend the Faith against us. They became the first Sentinels and since then they have watched us lead by the fervent Warden. This shows the beginning of the age of chains and it teaches us that even amongst each other there are those who would betray us. Since that day the Warden has been known as the Sword and the Bishop the Voice, for the Sword will put us to death and Voice will betray us till no end. "I thought they were called the Sword and Voice because of the Lord Warden's Sword Whitefire and the Bishop speaking your case for you in one voice?" "Of course that is what they wish for you to know. Like all the rest Little-Conner I have no doubt you'll do as told I hope though you'll not go about it as ignorant as you have done." With that she stood up and left, walking briskly down the Steps of Regret before finally disappearing down into the depths of the Tower as Conner made his way through the now open great timber door studded with iron rivets.
