My name for myself is 'spiritual free thinker.' I was inspired to write this article by a member of Booksie. This writer is an atheist who has written work here which I admire.

As defined, atheism is 'disbelief in the existence of God or gods.'

God- a god is a supreme being or diety. It's always spelled with a lower case 'g' when not reffering to the God of Christian, Jewish or Muslim religion. Within those religions, God with a capital 'G' is called creator and'ruler'  of the universe. 'He ' is the source of all 'moral authority' he 'judges' and 'punishes' and is a masculine being of perfect power and wisdom.

Consider the hyphenated words and term listed above, especially 'ruler'. The word brings forth thoughts of a forever king, where lowly subjects are always beneath him, stuck in a constant space of bowing and scraping. What a turn off! and hardly inspiring of real love.

Spiritual Atheist

There is such a person known as a 'Spiritual Atheist.' These people might find the gods of ancient Greece (lower case g ) something of amusing mythos, or a god such as Ganesha as symbolic, and these concepts in themself are harmless. But  atheists have problems concerning God, the one with the capital G.

An all powerful ruler who judges, rewards, condems and punishes is a large part Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The differing dogmas of these three religions are bound together, and with them the definition of 'enemy' is brought forth. And because of it, harm has been done.

Atheists understand this truth, and they proclaim themselves as humanists in active reality which is creative. They do what is correct free of God. Not believing in heaven or heavenly reward, atheists do good things here and now for the sake of goodness itself.

Here are some quotes from some known 'Spiritual Atheists"

"We are all given a gift of existence and of being sentient beings, and I think happiness lies in love and compassion"

Adam Pascal, musician-actor

"Being engaged in some way for the good of the community, what ever that community, is a factor in a meaningful life. We long to belong, and belonging and caring anchors our sense of place in the universe.

Patricia S. Churchland- neurophilosopher

"There is joy in the search for knowledge about the universe in all it's manifestations.

Janet Asimov- psychiatrist

"Any time I hear someone say that only humans have a thoughtful mind, a loving heart or a compassionate soul, I have to think that person has never owned a dog or known an elephant.

Aron Ra, Texas state director of American Atheists

"Religion is for people who fear hell, spirituality is for people who have been there."

David Bowie, songwriter- singer

Very very well said. I really agree with what you siad about The "creator" or "ruler" as the only source of the whole universe. Anyone who believes in that deserves to be "uncreated" at any time. I like each of the quote here. They are spiritual in deed, especially Aron's. The very idea that only humen are sentient beings bring forth cruelty on other living things or beings. It was one of the reasons that steered me away from Christian. Well done.

It's ironic that the three Abrahamic religions that believe in the same god are perhaps the ones that fight the most.

I would like to point out, the capital G in God is to refer to a specific god, i.e. a monotheistic god, such as God in the Abrahamic religions. The lowercase g would be for any gods pertaining to a polytheistic religion, or when used to group monotheistic and/or polytheistic gods together.

I don't think the issue is an atheist seeing issue with a monotheistic god and not a polytheistic. An atheist is simply a disbeliever in all gods (as opposed to monotheists, who disbelieve in one less god). The views of an atheist can vary and cannot be put into categories, the thing in common being their disbelief, whether they like the concept of a god or not. I think it important to make this point, because I have ran into quite the few theists that believe atheists 'hate' or 'fear' God. I had a discussion with a Christian recently, and he misinterpreted my frustration at his preaching as hatred in God. This, of course, is a contradiction. If it is true that an atheist hates or fears God then they must believe in said god and are therefore not an atheist. This is not to suggest they cannot dislike the hypothetical god, much like one can dislike Captain Hook, but also understand him not to be real.

I don't like the word spiritual, as I think it contains connotations that suggest belief in a soul, or, 'spirit', in that sense I guess I'm a materialist, or a 'naturalist'. I choose to believe in this world, the one I can see and question and that appears to make sense and be consistent within the laws of itself that we may or may not yet know. My idol in the Bible would be doubting Thomas, I fail to understand how he is portrayed as a flawed character, when he is following the sound advice, 'Question everything.'

The most violent and destructive religion the world has seen is the secular one of Communism created by the atheist Marx to establish Paradise on earth.

A very well-considered piece, LE. I think, by definition, atheists worship nothing, but like you say do good just for the good of it. There's no reward, no punishment, just a show of empathy and support, not just to other people but to all species.

Thanks hullabaloo22... it's not about worship, but active participation in creation...
