I straightened out the thin silk fabric of my short strapless dress. Then Iran a hand through my dark ash brown coloured hair, ruffling it up. Ichecked the mirror beside the door and made sure I looked perfect. Then Ireached out and opened the door.
There to greet me was, Jason in his black tuxedo. He was the first person to speak to me since arriving at the school. I had only been there for a month but I had made a good friend. In fact he was such a good friend that he offered to take me to the prom. Being at the school for only four or so weeks hadn't allowed me to prepare much for the prom, and so in my rush to get organise I had forgotten the most important thing, a date to go with.
But Jason being the good friend offered to go with me as soon as I had started to complain.
"Ready to go?" He asked me, smiling flashy white teeth. I smiled back. I really liked Jason. As in I likeliked him. He was a kind, caring, sweet man. He had the coolest light brown hair, the warmest hazel eyes and the smile that never could make me not smile in return.
Jason offered his arm and I took it. Holding his elbow with both hands. He led me down the apartment stairs, and yes I lived alone at the age of eighteen.
"You are so lucky to live alone and not have your parents annoying you." Jason chuckled as he helped me into the back of a rented black limousine.
I smiled awkwardly in response. I had never told anyone for the real reason as to why Ihad lived alone. Not even Jason knew the truth.
We drove through the small rural town to the school's location. The prom was being held in the gym. The big brown building could be seen from here.
People in suits and coloured dresses all headed for the building. The doors were opened and dim blue lights shown out.
There was a theme for the prom, which was the ocean.
Ifollowed Jason out of the limousine. But stopped when he turned to me, flashing me a smile.
"What?" I asked.
"I almost forgot something." His smile grew and he ducked back in the limousine only to come out holding a little white gift wrapped box. He handed it to me. I blinked, looking down at it.
"What's this?" I smiled.
"Open it." I didn't hesitate to rip it open. I gasped and looked at Justin with a wide smile.
"It's beautiful." I whispered. I pulled the white lily out from the box. It was one of those fake flowers you put on your wrist, a tradition for proms. Well it was here.
"It's tradition, you can't go to prom without the traditional flower bracelet." Jason said. He took the flower and waited for me to hold out my arm. I did watching him in awe as he slid it over my wrist. He smiled once it was in place.
"There." I almost felt like crying right there on the spot but Itook a breath and grabbed Jason's hand.
"Let's go!" Icrowed excitedly. Jason looked down at me for a moment but then began to lead me to the building.
Inside the building was decorated with streamers and looked very much like the theme of the ocean. A white buffet table stood on one side full of seafood, my favourite food. But Iignored the food and walked to the centre of the dance floor. Soft music, modern but still soft, played loudly and many other couples were already dancing.
"Let's dance."Isat smiling up at Jason. I place my arms around his neck and he placed his around my waist. And then we were off. We danced in perfect unison, with each other and the music. And it felt great!
I loved dancing. The rhythms and they way my feet moved across the floor. I moved gracefully and every part of my body moved in perfect harmony.
"You look extremely beautiful, Ariel." Jason whispered in my ear and Iblushed in response.
'Well, you look very handsome, Jason." Ismiled. We continued to dance for the rest of the night. I never wanted to take a break. It was exhilarating having the feeling of being in Jason's arms and gliding around the floor.
After one song we stopped to take a breath. Jason still had his arms around my waist, and mine were still around his neck.
"Ariel?" He whispered my names. And when I looked into his warm Hazel eyes he looked nervous.
"Yes?"
"I've wanted to tell you this for awhile..." He paused and my heart started to beat faster. "I love you, Ariel."He whispered the confession but it was loud enogu for me to hear. Ismile. Ifelt flattered, and warmed. He loved me.
"I love you too." My cheeks felt like they would start to hurt from my big grin. Jason smile back. Suddenly Paramore's song "You are the only exception" started to playing on my phone.
My alarm!. I grabbed my phone which was strapped to my high heels. It was 11:20pm. Ilooked up at Jason in panic.
"What?" He asked in concern. Tear welded in my eyes.
"I'm sorry, Jason. I got to go." I almost couldn't say the words. Before Jason could word "what?" I stood on my toes and gave him a kiss. It was long and passionate. Jason kissed me back, but Icould still fill his confusion.
Then Ipulled away and ran from the room, the building and the school. Jason called my name after me. But Iused my legs to push and push, so I ran as fast as Icould. I liked running too, and I was really fast. But at the moment Icouldn't enjoy the feeling of my feet pounding in rhythm against the ground.
Iran into the woods too the river.
It ran to the ocean which was in the east. Reeds of flowers grew from the water. Iwaded out until the water was up to my waist. Two trees loomed over me. One had a white owl sitting on the branch.
"Sylvia." I whispered and the witch looked my way.
"Are you ready my child." The owl cooed. I nodded and looked to the cloudy sky. The full moon was just visible. A flock of black birds flew across the sky.
My body started to tingle and little shimmers of light surrounded me. Igave myself up to the transformation.
When Iopened my eyes next Iwas under the water of river. Ibreathed in the water and breathed out. I was back. I flicked my tail and looked along the shimmering gold scales. I removed my white dress so Iwore nothing but my bra. I could feel my hair swaying in the current of the river, towards the ocean, my home.
My parents, the other mer-people would be expecting me.
Iswam back up to the top and poked my head above the water.
"Sylvia, can you tell Jason I'm sorry and that Ilove him? And if you can... tell him the truth." I whispered. The white witch owl, who had granted me my wish of spending one month, from one full moon to another as a human, nodded her head and flew away.
Isighed before diving back under water to begin my journey back home.
I would miss my human legs, the feet and the way Icould move. But most of all Iwould miss Jason.
