Poem 2: After buying pork chops,the woman's story continues... will they meet?


The woman saw the girl again –

Outside the market, on her cell phone.

The woman couldn’t help but

Look at the girl’s


She wanted to say, “Excuse me. Where did you buy those shoes?’


In front of the meat counter,
The woman’s mind kept returning to the shoes.
“Perhaps I’m not too old,” she thought – or thought she’d thought.
"Something else?" The man behindthe counter asked.
“No, just the pork chops,” she had said.
But something in the way he asked the question made her wonder –
Had “I’m not too old,” come out aloud?
I’m talking to myself, she thought.
I talk to myself all the time.

Now the woman found her self

Outside - a bag of groceries in her reusable tote, bought and paid for in her sleep -
Near the girl who was wearing the shoes which

The woman hoped might

Make her
