Pornography does not lead to violence

The only difference between the moral and immoral subject is the level of acceptance by society. The obvious wrong judgments like damaging personal property, physically hurting others and humiliating other in some way can automatically picked as immoral actions. But what about the vague subject as pornography with controversy in causing violence? However, the overall society leans over to the immoral field for pornography. Then, what kind of data led the society to plant the idea of “immoral pornography?” There is no such evidence to prove that the pornography leads to violence; the pornography definitely does not lead to violence against women. Moreover, the prejudiced viewpoint has finally conquered the individual right to be free under the society’s biased opinion.

The pornography is mostly viewed as unrighteous action due to its overly worried side effect; the ones with experience of watching porn will grow up to be abusive in sex life and violent against women. Since the pornography depicts a sexual seduction, it would possibly include some actions that could consider as violence. However, the definition of violence is vague in pornography. The sexual violence is a forceful action of raping without the victim’s agreement. But when the pornstars are posing for a shoot, they are not embarrassed to expose themselves but they actually enjoy to be exposed in legal way. Moreover, the level of violation in pornography is not at the crisis level with possibility of killing the pornstars. Every action in pornography has been designed to be in certain way to increase the audience’s interest; screaming and moaning to express, smacking the certain part of body and pulling hair back to depict certain picture are scripted for its own purpose, the satisfaction. Then, the audiences get excited with pornography because they observe the pornstars are enjoying taking a sexual photo shoot that gives vicarious satisfaction. If the both procedure and pornstars agreed with physical abuse in pornography, it cannot be digressed by manipulating their legal contract as the sexual harassment.

Among the supports for the correlation between pornography and sexual violence, the realistic counterargument is that the violence in pornography can lead to the violence in a real life. The most credible evidence is the serial killer in Florida, Ted Bundy. The correlation between pornography and sexual violence started to get spotlight since Ted Bundy stated “how early exposure to pornography consumed him and led him down his murderous path…. the message in pornography primed him for those actions” (Weiss 3). The serial killer’s connection in pornography and violence strongly impacted today’s society viewpoint in pornography; people believed the violence in pornography could dramatically impact one to be the killer. The Ted Bundy’s experienced confession appeared honest and truthful, but the research with valid data statistically proved that the pornography is definitely not the primary impulse for violence or murder. Among 6.91 billion people in earth, about 28.7% of them use internet, and approximately 80% of the internet users watch porn on internet, which sums up to be around 1.6 billion in the world (World 1). If the Ted Bundy’s confession was true, all of those 1.6 billion people should have shown at least the similar symptom to be the killer as Ted Bundy did; this argument becomes rapidly weakened by insignificant number of killers impacted by porn in the world. According to the most recent data, the weighted average of killers is 0.1 per 1,000 people which is approximately 160,000 killers watching porn on internet (Murders 2). As the result, the percentage of murderers in the world who possibly had impact from the internet porn is only about 0.02% in the world’s population; the result is not dominating number compared to the population of overall murderers in the world. This data and analysis prove that not all the porn watchers on internet are turn out to be the killers. In that case, there must be some other facts that drive the certain number of porn watchers to execute the unrighteous action as such as the confusion between the dream and reality or psychopathic and mental issue.

Simply, there is no such a correlation between pornography and violence against women with valid yet reasonable evidence. But there are few credible data to prove that the pornography does not lead to violence against women. In fact, the pornography has directly proportional relationship with violence; if one variable increases, the other variable decreases. The research paper of Stanford Law School stated that “states where internet access expanded the fastest saw rape decline the most” (Chapman 2). If the internet access is faster than other places, people are more likely to explore more pornography websites than the people in the other states with slower internet access do in the same amount of time. The uncorrelated relationship between the pornography and violence might seem shocking compared to the biased viewpoint in society. But the overall tendency in today has also agreed with the Stanford Law School’s data. “Since 1993, violent crime in America has dropped by 58 percent …. Rape is down 72 percent and other sexual assaults have fallen by 68 percent” (Chapman 1). Moreover, the FBI had reported the similar data, the overall tendency has started to decrease no matter how far the number of porn watchers increased. With number of valid evidences, the pornography might actually discourage the sexual crime; people with right judgment distinguish the wrongdoings from the pornography and only accept them as the part of pornography on internet rather than execute them in real life.

Overall, the pornography was known for stimulating the audiences to be abusive and violent in real life after due to the confusion between the fantasy and the real world. The moral standards in society can sometimes be inapplicable as pornography with violence. Overall, as the research data had stated, the pornography has no influence in causing violence yet it rather declines the number of sexual crimes.
