I walked into school late as I had gone with Lily to the ob/gyn. I still found it hard to wrap my head around the fact that I was going to be a father. Lily was everything I ever wanted and even as a child I knew that I could never love anyone but her. If you asked me a week before, if it was possible to love Lily more, then I would have said no, but that would be wrong. I fell more and more in love with her every day.
I walked into my classroom after break, just in time for period 3 and sat at my desk, smiling as flashes of what had been done on the desk before. My year seven students came into the room and sat at their usual desks. For the first time, I actually watched them and paid close attention to them. In about 12 years, our child would be in this position. I thought.
As the last child came in, I stood up to start the lesson. “So I’m going to show you a few videos and want you to compare and contrast them...”
Before I knew it, it was the end of the day, with only one class left. I got a few odd looks from the students as they saw my smile. I wouldn’t call myself a strict teacher, but it was hard to get me to smile in class. Only Lily was ever able to notice my smiles. She could always tell what I was feeling, even if my face was as stoic as could be. Thinking of her only reminded me of her current state and my smile grew.
“I want you guys to pair up, choose a controversial topic and debate two different views on it. You can discuss your ideas with anyone in class and for the last 20 minutes, some of you will show what you have to the class. Your homework is to perfect it by Wednesday.” I had expected the class to get on with it as the task was pretty easy and laid back, but they just stared at me in silence.
A hand shot up and I nodded at the student. “Do we have to write down the debate we do?” She asked. I think her name was Lucy.
“Only if you want to.” I look spread across the room. Clearly, my students thought I had gone mad as I never gave them this much free rein on what they did, but only Hannah seemed indifferent as she was the only one to know the source of my happiness.
I sat back down and eventually the students got on with the work. I got out my phone and flicked through pictures of Lily and me. I don’t know how long I was looking at my phone, 5 or 50 minutes, before it vibrated indicating that I had a text.
*Miss you right now. I always look forward to English just so I could look at your sexy teacher face and hear your mean voice.*
I laughed out loud at the text form Lily and wondered how she’d feel as I was definitely not being mean today. I’m sure the students were beside themselves thinking of why I was suddenly so cheerful.
At the corner of the room, a phone started ringing. Silence spread round the students and a boy was fumbling with his pocket trying to turn off the phone.
“Sorry sir.” He brought it out and was about to stand up so he could hand it to me, but I stopped him.
“That’s fine, but guys, if you’re going to leave your phone on during school time, at least put it on silent.” A gasp echoed through the class.
“Mr Ryder, what is up with you today? It’s not that I’m complaining, but why are you so happy?” Lucy asked the question on so many minds, and I was only too glad to answer.
“My wife’s pregnant.” I loved the short sentence completely.
I hardly heard the congratulations as I was distracted by another text.
*Just about a couple hours till you come home. Love you and miss you xxx*
I quickly replied. *I’ll be home as soon as I can and I love you more. No arguing, you know it’s true.*
I put my phone away and continued the lesson.
As the final bell rung, I followed the students as they packed up their belongings. I never knew how much I needed seeing Lily till that day.
“Guess we don’t have a chance with him...”
“He must really love her...”
“...he’s gonna be a DILF, I wonder if his wife’s hot enough to be a MILF.”
“Probably is, hot people tend to stick together.” This followed a stream of laughter.
The snippets of conversation that flowed from my students would have made Lily’s day. I knew she got jealous of girls when they showed any interest in me, even if she didn’t tell me. I know I’ve said this before, but I was so in love with that woman, it was impossible to believe.
I finished packing up my things and rushed out of school to meet my waiting wife.
