It's surprising how hard sometimes it is to get to sleep these days
I could put it down to diet, work, money, stress
It would be easy to overlook the fact that where you used to lay
Is a space filled by a cold dent in the mattress.
I toss and turn and irritated roll about at night these days
I can remember drifting off after a kiss, God Bless
Now, knowing there is nobody to affectionately wish to sleep
I sometimes fall into the cold dent in the mattress.
I hear the cars and foxes and mating cats outside the gate
Stare at the ceiling, walls, photos and your hanging dress
Think of the nights of passion and you tight in my arms
Now, when I look to picture your face it's a cold dent in the mattress.
When the 'heydays' were here and we laughed and made love
This room in this house was the heart of our fortress
Now it's a battle to gasp for air, take in a breath
And all that's left of what was is a cold dent in the mattress.
