Tears glistened down her cheeks, she was in deep though as she chewed the chocolaty M&Ms. Crunch Crunch Crunch became Douglas Douglas Douglas. The wind was howling but all she heard was Doouuugggllaassss. Everything was on the right track until Lisa asked Douglas out. She knew in the back of her head that he would say yes. She was pretty and popular. So much for her happy ending. Reality caught up to her when her favorites playlist came up. It contained her favorite songs, songs that Douglas recommended her, some bands that Douggie had recommended her and some songs that she and Douglas had both loved.A day in May came on. Alice let the tears roll down her face, and didn’t stop more from being made. She let them roll down her face. She looked at the screen of her iPod. The music video for A day in May was playing. She had always wished for a moment like that. She always played her favorite scene in her head, except with her and Douglas. Before she used to love that scene, but now it was a pain in the ass, and it hurt so much. The white sheets would shish around in the summer breeze. Just when he appeared by her side smiling, with a swish of a blanket he would disappear, leaving her confused. Then once again reappearing by her side with a kiss, then in the next scene she would be reading and he was writing a song with his guitar on his lap. With a swish of a blanket she was asleep on his shoulder, end. She gasped, forgetting to breathe. She scurried to the bathroom, to wipe her tears and wash her face. When she returned she found Douglas at her seat. Alice stood there, paralyzed and mortified.
“Did you know this library had very interesting literature?” He asked.
“Oh holy shit! You really shouldn’t have read that.” She could feel the color rushing to her cheeks.
“Sit.” He commanded. She obliged. She sat across from him. He finished reading the story. An awkward silence had skipped in and sat itself between them.
“You write very well.”
“Thanks.”
“Write more.” He smiled.
“Say please.” She smiled back. The old friend she knew was returning.
“Please.”
“If you insist.”
“I do.”
They chatted until the library closed for the day, and then they walked out together.
“Is your girlfriend ok with this?”
“Girlfriend? Yeah right, if I had one.”
“I thought you and Lisa were going out.”
“No” he paused. “No, she’s too bitchy and boring for me.”
“Oh ok”
“Will you go out with me?”
“Hell no.” Alice walked away with sass in her stride like a model on a catwalk. Just as Douglas turned around and walked away Alice turned around and ran. She practically tackled him in a hug, He stood up, her arms still around him.
“Jesus is that a yes or a no?”
“An Of Course”
“Just the answer I was waiting for.”
They were on a little island of cement about to cross the street, when Douglas noticed she was shivering. He immediately put his arms around her. She kissed him on the cheek as a response. Soon they leaned closer against each. Their eyes locked, exactly like in the movies. Her hair whipped around them. The cars sped past them, the city was in motion and the sun was lowering itself onto the horizon. It was a unique setting, not exactly the perfect one Alice had pictured in A Day in May. It seemed life forever but soon they crossed the street.
“Same place, same time tomorrow?”
“Yeah…in the library”
“They chuckled and walked away. Her heart skipped a beat when she realized she had forgotten her story. She turned around. He had the piece of lined paper folded up neatly. He was holding it in between his fingers. She smiled and popped an M&M into her mouth. Douglas,Douglas,Douglas.
