I went to this place in Egypt in the late eighties and it has stayed in my mind's eye. I'd welcome title ideas - I keep changing it.

On Elephantine Island, Aswan,

oleanders grow down to the shore,

and ibis shelter in green reed shade

when the touch of the breeze blows warm.

Feluccas skim along fearlessly,

tacking across the flow of the Nile,

and every wave mirrors the sunlight

as I linger to look for a while.

His elegant, domed mausoleum

is crafted in polished pink marble,

and rests on the roof of a green hill,

gilded with rays from the sun.

At this ancient crossroad of history,

where Egypt greets the Nubian Nile,

today's red rose lays on his grave,

and I linger in thought for a while.
