EXT.FOREST.DAWN

The shot very slowly fades in to a view of dead, snow-covered trees. No snow is falling, or wind blowing. It is difficult to tell whether or not it is a photograph. There is no sound, other than the ambient noise of the middle of nowhere. The camera lingers on the scene, unmoving, and finally fades out just as slow.
EXT.HIGHWAY.MORNING
It is a crisp winter morning on a highway. In the distance, we see a tiny vehicle coming closer. The sound of the engine grows louder as the vehicle, revealed to be a van, comes closer, and finally blows past to the left of the shot.
Inside the van, JAKE is driving, while ROB occupies the passenger seat. The window is down and ROB has his head in the wind. In the back are seated JENNIFER, LINDA, and SIMON.
JAKE turns to ROB and speaks.
JAKE
Close the window.
ROB cannot hear over the wind.
JAKE
Rob, close, the window!
ROB turns and looks at JAKE. He bends and rolls up the window.
SIMON
Thank you.
ROB grunts in response and leans his head against the window, staring out at the landscape.
JENNIFER
How far are we going today?
JAKE
We should get there around tonight.
ROB
What if we get lost?
JAKE
It's one road. You can't get lost.
ROB
What if we don't make it in time?
JAKE
It'll be fine. Open the window.
ROB
What?
JAKE
It's too hot.
ROB stares at JAKE incredulously, and opens the window.
The van speeds down the empty highway. The sky is empty of clouds, except for a large, dark bank on the horizon. The sun shines off the snow which covers everything except the road, a single black line though the white landscape.
Inside the van, SIMON grows restless. He glances toward the backpack at the rear. He looks back at JAKE, who is focused on the road. SIMON gets up and opens the backpack, rummaging through it for a moment.
JAKE
What are you doing?
SIMON pulls out a plastic bag with a few joints inside.
SIMON
Merry Christmas.
JENNIFER
Awesome. (laughs)
JAKE looks back.
JAKE
What- oh, come on.
SIMON
What? I'm bored.
JAKE
No. Ok? No. Not in the van.
SIMON
The window's open.
JAKE
No. I don't want my van smelling like weed.
SIMON
The van already smells like weed.
JAKE
Yes, because of you. So no.
Defeated, SIMON returns the bag to his backpack.
SIMON
Can we at least stop somewhere? I'm gonna go crazy sitting here.
ROB turns from the window.
ROB
Simon, shut up!
SIMON
Ok. (mutters) Christ...
ROB returns to staring out the window.
JAKE
Hey, maybe we should stop.
ROB
No, we should keep going. Try to get there by four.
JAKE
Everyone's restless, Rob. We don't really need to get there early, or even tonight.
SIMON
So whose idea was it to go home right on Christmas Eve? Yeah, let's stay at a hotel tonight and get there in time for dinner.
ROB
I'd just like to not be stuck somewhere. Not tonight. And I don't like those clouds.
JAKE stares at the horizon, where the dark cloud bank has grown larger.
JAKE
Yeah.
The van speeds off along the road, past a growing forest of snow-covered evergreens.
EXT.FOREST.LATE AFTERNOON
The forest is still and silent, darkened by the now-overcast sky, and snow has begun to fall. The CAMERA moves through the trees as if from the POINT of VIEW of an unseen watcher. Weaving around the branches, the watcher moves faster and faster, the only sound the whispering of wind, as well as a low sound which could be described as breathing. The unknown creature flies through the trees at an alarming rate, and suddenly comes upon the highway, where it turns. The headlights of the van are seen, and as the van roars past-
INT.VAN.LATE AFTERNOON
SIMON has produced a bottle of whiskey from somewhere. He, JENNIFER, and LINDA sit in a rough circle around each other.
JENNIFER
Ok, it's your turn. (indicating LINDA)
LINDA
Ok. Never have I ever done anything...
SIMON
Anything what?
JENNIFER
Anything sexual, you creep. Are you familiar with the concept?
SIMON
Maybe. It rings a bell, but I might require a small demonstration to fully understand- ow!
JENNIFER punches SIMON.
JAKE
Stop it!
SIMON
Sorry, Dad. We won't do it again. Honest.
JENNIFER
Sorry, Linda. Go on.
LINDA
Never have I ever done anything...sexual, in a public place, where someone could see.
JENNIFER retrieves the bottle and drinks.
SIMON
Oh I have got to hear about this one.
JENNIFER
Forget it, you pervert.
SIMON
Rules of the game. If it is requested, any player must divulge further details related to the statement of activity that they, themselves, have partaken in. It's in the book.
LINDA laughs.
LINDA
Come on, what was it?
JENNIFER
Ok, fine.
SIMON leans forward and props his head on his hands. JENNIFER grins despite herself.
JENNIFER
Back in 12th grade. It was me and Jesse, behind the penalty box on the rink.
SIMON
I think I actually heard about this.
LINDA
Did anyone see you?
JENNIFER
You can kind of see behind there from the science room, and Jesse swears that he saw Mr. Wilson staring at us, but I never heard anything about it. Where the hell did you hear about it?
SIMON
Jesse told me. He also told me what you were doing. Very impressive.
JENNIFER
Shut up! Linda doesn't-
LINDA
Actually, I kind of heard about it too.
JENNIFER
Well, who the hell told you?
LINDA
I think it was Scott.
JENNIFER
How did he know?
SIMON
Oh. I told him. I think.
JENNIFER glares at SIMON.
SIMON
I'm sorry! It was like two years ago, and he already kind of knew about it.
JENNIFER
Whatever.
LINDA
Anyway, it's Simon's turn.
SIMON
No, it's Rob's. We go in a circle, but Jake can't because he's driving.
ROB
Nah, I don't want to.
JENNIFER
Oh, come on!
SIMON
Join the party! You've been in this shitty mood all day.
ROB
I have a headache.
SIMON
But if you drink, then maybe no headache.
JENNIFER
Rob can't play because he's done literally everything.
ROB gives in and smiles.
ROB
Never have I ever-
JAKE
FUCK!!!
JAKE slams on the brakes. The van slides, and JAKE wrestles with the steering wheel. ROB braces himself against the dashboard, and JENNIFER screams. SIMON falls over, and snatches the bottle of whiskey before it tips over. The van spins around, knocking SIMON, JENNIFER and LINDA around in the back. Finally the van slows, and then stops.
JAKE breathes hard, gripping the steering wheel tight. ROB turns to him as if to say something, but JAKE suddenly undoes his seat belt and leaps from the van.
The van sits a distance away, partly obscured by the snow, which is falling quite heavy now. JAKE is running towards the CAMERA.
ROB jumps out the other side, and chases JAKE.
JAKE reaches the CAMERA and stops, peering out into the falling snow.
ROB stops beside him, panting and looking around as well.
The side door of the van slides open and SIMON, JENNIFER and LINDA pile out. SIMON, still holding the bottle of whiskey, dashes toward JAKE and ROB, with JENNIFER and LINDA following behind. They stumble to a stop beside them, and stare out into the snow falling on the road.
For a long moment, no one speaks. Slowly, their breathing collectively slows.
Finally, without looking at JAKE, ROB speaks.
ROB
Jake?
JAKE does not answer for a moment.
JAKE
Yeah?
ROB
What's going on?
JAKE
I saw something.
SIMON
What?
JAKE
I don't know. Maybe it was a person.
ROB
Did you hit them?
JAKE
No! I don't know! I saw him right next to the van, and I braked!
JENNIFER
Hello?
ROB
Anybody there?
There is only silence.
LINDA
Hello?!
SIMON
I can't see anyone. Whoever they are, they probably left.
LINDA
Or they're too hurt to talk!
SIMON
We'd have known if we hit something. We just stopped.
JAKE
The van. Check the van.
The entire group runs back to the van and begins looking over the outside.
SIMON, sipping from the whiskey, glances over the front, and sees something.
SIMON
Uh, guys?
Everyone gathers around SIMON.
JAKE
Oh, no. Oh fuck.
The van is dented and the headlight is slightly popped out.
SIMON
Well... I guess it could have happened anywhere...
JAKE
Shut the fuck up! We hit him! We fucking hit him!
ROB
Calm down, man.
JAKE
Shit. Shit. Shit.
LINDA
Come on!
LINDA runs off, followed by SIMON, JENNIFER and ROB. JAKE remains by the van.
The four of them begin to search the road, calling.
ROB
Jake! Is this where you saw him?
ROB is down the road a way, making him difficult to see in the now-swirling snow. JAKE jogs down to where he is standing.
The tire marks are obvious in the snow, and there are some marks that could have been a person.
SIMON approaches.
SIMON
There any blood or anything?
ROB
There's nothing, really.
SIMON
I don't see any footprints.
ROB
Neither do I.
JAKE
Is he there?
ROB
There's nothing here. Whatever it was, it's gone.
LINDA and JENNIFER join them.
LINDA
Maybe it was just an animal.
JENNIFER
Yeah, if it was a person, why would they run away?
JAKE
No. No, I saw a person. A man.
ROB
Why would a person be all the way out here? And why would he run away? If we hit him, he would obviously need help.
The group stands for a moment in the snow.
SIMON
We should go.
JAKE
What?!
ROB
No, he's right. Jake, we can't go after it, whatever it was. We can't just leave the van and go off into the woods. We need to go.
JAKE
It was someone. Not an animal.
ROB
Maybe you did see a person, but even if you did, it could have been anything. It was hard to see anything in the snow.
JENNIFER
It could have been a bear. Bears stand up.
LINDA
And they're big and strong enough to run away after being hit.
JAKE
No, it wasn't a bear.
ROB
Come on. It's cold. You can't stay here.
JAKE
It wasn't a bear.
ROB pulls JAKE away and all of them move back to the van. Silently, SIMON, JENNIFER and LINDA climb into the back and shut the door. JAKE moves to the driver's side.
ROB
I'll drive.
JAKE nods and walks around the car, glancing once at the damage. He pauses, then gets into the car. ROB is already starting the van.
The van pulls forward and straightens on the road, moving away slowly through the snow.
An unseen watcher moves through the trees, watching the van as it speeds away. Turning, the watcher darts away through the trees. The only sounds are the wind and a low sound not unlike breathing.
INT.VAN.EVENING
JAKE sits much as ROB did, head against the glass, staring out at the snow, which has gotten much worse.
ROB drives cautiously, JENNIFER and LINDA are silent, and even SIMON has an air of unease.
Finally, JAKE breaks the ice.
JAKE
We should have been there by now.
ROB
Well, I've been driving slow.
JAKE
I know. At around 90, we should have been there an hour ago.
ROB
We'll get there.
JAKE
Not without gas, we won't.
The gas tank is almost empty.
SIMON
Well, fuck.
ROB
Just calm down, everyone.
JENNIFER
Now what?
ROB
We made sure we had enough gas. If we're on empty, it can't be far.
JENNIFER
Or, we'll run out on the road and freeze to death.
ROB
You got a better idea?
JENNIFER
Yes! Turn off the next road you see. There was a bunch a while ago. They have to go somewhere.
SIMON
Sure, if it's not some 80-mile dirt road that leads to an old abandoned summer camp.
JENNIFER
Well, we can't just keep going until we run out. We have to take a chance.
SIMON
We could stop for the night, right here. Huddle up in some blankets and wait it out. It'll be fine.
JAKE
This van wasn't built for winter. It's taking full heat right now just to keep it this warm. We'd have to idle all night, and we don't have the gas.
SIMON
Well, what if we don't find a road?!
ROB
What if there's a hotel just ahead?!
JAKE
Shut up!
Everyone falls silent. They are all afraid.
JAKE
Let's turn onto the next road we see, OK? If we don't see one, then we keep going until we find a hotel or run out of gas, then try to get through the night with blankets.
SIMON
And what if the road doesn't go anywhere?
JAKE
Same thing.
JENNIFER
But what if-
JAKE
I don't know! None of us are sure! We just have to do something and hope it works!
ROB stares at the road ahead, and everyone else returns to silence.
EXT.FOREST.NIGHT
An unseen watcher moves through the driving snow. Trees provide some respite from the white blindness, but the watcher seems not to mind. In the distance, a pair of headlights approaches, and moves off. There is no sound but the wind, and a heavy, low breathing sound.
INT.VAN.NIGHT
ROB drives with a stoic but unsettled face. JAKE's eyes are locked out the window. SIMON is sitting with JENNIFER, and he fiddles with the whiskey bottle from time to time. LINDA sits near the front, closer to JAKE.
There is an almost despairing silence, until...
ROB
There!
JAKE
What?
ROB
A road! A goddamn road!
ROB slows the van to a stop, and a small road can only be seen by a pair of old wooden posts.
JAKE
I was afraid there wouldn't be one, or we'd miss it if there was.
SIMON
Let's go, then.
There is no sound, no argument- this is the only choice. ROB eases the van onto the road and carefully navigates through the close-knit trees.
For a long while, there is nothing. The road curves and moves upward slightly, but other than that there is only trees.
Abruptly, there is a sign on the side of the road. Snow coats the top, and it is old and decrepit, but it is readable: MITCHELL MANOR.
ROB
Manor?
SIMON
What, like Wayne Manor?
ROB
I dunno.
The road continues for a while longer, and from out of the snow, the Mitchell Manor comes into view. Long and distorted, the mansion cannot be seen in its entirety. There is a great slab of a door at the front, and a sheer wall at least three stories high. A huge picture window replaces the wall at the third floor, ending in a curved roof.
SIMON
Bull. Shit.
ROB moves the van closer, and stops. Everyone climbs out and gazes up at the mansion.
JENNIFER
Well, fuck me.
SIMON
Who builds a whole mansion out here? Or lives in it, for that matter?
LINDA
No one, maybe. There's no light. Maybe it's empty.
ROB
Doesn't look abandoned.
JAKE
It's a fucking mansion in the middle of nowhere. Come on.
JAKE heads for the door, followed by everyone else. As he reaches it, he brushes snow of the handle, grabs hold and pulls hard. The door shifts slightly, but otherwise does not budge.
JAKE
Shit.
JENNIFER
Here, genius.
JENNIFER brushes off the latch, pushes down, and with effort, manages to pull the door slightly free.
JAKE
Oh.
JAKE and JENNIFER heave the door open, and they all step inside.
EXT.MANSION.NIGHT
An unseen watcher peers from the trees at the door, illuminated by the headlights of the van. As the group steps inside, the watcher moves forward, towards the van. Approaching softly, the watcher gazes into the windows, glimpsing the luggage and bottle of whiskey. Suddenly, it turns, and sees JAKE coming out of the mansion again. Swiftly, it retreats to the trees, turning to see JAKE opening the door of the van. The watcher moves quickly away through the trees.
INT.MANSION.NIGHT
ROB, SIMON, JENNIFER and LINDA have spread around the room, examining what little they can in the headlights shining through the door. The room is musty and old, but relatively undisturbed. There is little debris and rot, but it is an old, and obviously abandoned, mansion.
JAKE reenters the door with a flashlight and shines it around the room.
ROB
This is beyond insane.
JENNIFER
This is amazing.
The room is a wide hall, with a greying carpet and peeling paint. Wooden chairs are scattered here and there, and the hall ends with a great entrance flanked by two staircases which turn off either side of the entrance.
JAKE
Why the fuck is this here?
SIMON
Who the fuck cares?
SIMON walks to the entrance and moves through it.
SIMON
Holy shit.
The rest move into the room, and JAKE scans the room with his flashlight. Only glimpses are seen, but it is a large, circular room with many paintings adorning the walls. Everything is old and dusty, but still relatively intact. The staircases curve up from the entrance around the whole room, meeting near the ceiling at a doorway. The staircases also pass two other doorways across the room from each other, halfway up the height of the room.
SIMON
Let's go upstairs!
JAKE
Just wait a second!
SIMON
There's probably- gold! Or- something!
JAKE
Just stay together. This place is probably falling apart. Everything looks good, but the stairs break as soon as you touch them.
SIMON
If the stairs break, we'll take the other stairs.
With this, SIMON jogs back toward the entrance, and the stairs.
JENNIFER
Wait!
JENNIFER runs after him.
JAKE
Wait, stop! Just wait-
ROB
Come on. The house isn't going to fall down.
JAKE
Just come back here after!
SIMON
Yeah!
SIMON and JENNIFER move quickly up the stairs, and JAKE, ROB and LINDA continue to circle the room.
INT.MANSION.NIGHT
SIMON and JENNIFER enter the first door they come to. It leads into a study, with a large desk and a lot of paper lying around, mostly on the floor.
SIMON
Ok, check for gold.
JENNIFER
Sure.
SIMON and JENNIFER explore the room. JENNIFER looks at some of the papers and the few pictures on the desk, while Simon searches the cabinets around the room.
JENNIFER picks up another picture and wipes the dust off.
JENNIFER
I think this was a family's house. They're all the same people in these pictures.
SIMON
Huh. Wonder what happened to them.
JENNIFER
Why would something happen to them?
SIMON
Well, either they just forgot about the huge mansion they own, or something happened to them, and along the line, someone forgot about the huge mansion they own. All the stuff is still here.
JENNIFER
Yeah...
JENNIFER looks at the picture again. It is a boy with his parents. The picture looks recent, in colour, but somehow old. It is not a portrait, but a cheery, outdoor scene taken with a disposable camera.
JENNIFER replaces the picture where it was, and moves away.
SIMON
Jackpot.
JENNIFER
What? Is it gold?
SIMON
Better.
SIMON is standing in front of a glass-doored cabinet. Whatever is inside is obscured by grime, but SIMON has wiped a hole clean to look in.
SIMON tries to open the cabinet.
SIMON
Locked. Oh well.
Retrieving a metal statuette from the desk, SIMON returns to the cabinet and carefully breaks one of the doors.
JENNIFER
What are you doing?
SIMON
Just a second.
SIMON reaches into the hole and undoes the lock from the other side. Both doors swing open, revealing a collection of antique swords and knives.
JENNIFER
Wow.
SIMON
Yeah.
SIMON retrieves a large claymore and unsheathes the wide blade. He swings it heavily, causing JENNIFER to jump back.
SIMON
Awesome.
JENNIFER
Watch out!
SIMON
Sorry.
SIMON sheathes the claymore and replaces it, retrieving a twin set of rapiers. He hands one to JENNIFER.
SIMON
Here, take this.
JENNIFER pulls the thin, light sword from its sheath.
JENNIFER
Nice.
SIMON dramatically whips his own sword free and poses.
SIMON
Check it out- En garde!
He swings his sword around in front of him to point at JENNIFER. JENNIFER smiles, then strikes his blade with hers, sweeping it out of the way. Quickly, she knocks it out of his hand with a sharp blow and kicks one of his legs out, knocking him backward onto the ground. Gently, she levels the point at his chest.
SIMON
What-
JENNIFER
Fencing club, Cyrano.
SIMON
Who?
JENNIFER
No one.
JENNIFER lowers the rapier. SIMON laughs, and JENNIFER smiles back. She offers him her hand, and helps him up.
SIMON
Let's see if we can find some gold.
SIMON moves off into the adjacent room, and JENNIFER follows.
INT.MANSION.NIGHT
JAKE, ROB and LINDA circle the great room. There is a door on the other side, across from the entrance. ROB approaches to try it.
ROB hauls on the door, and it opens with slight resistance.
The inside is dark, the flashlight revealing little. This room is slightly more decayed than the rest of the house. It is eventually revealed to be a large dining room. A large table dominates the room, and there are chairs strewn about, some of them still at the table. Dust coats everything, and strings of it run from the edge of the open door to the door frame.
JAKE moves into the dining room, sweeping the flashlight from side to side. The room is long, ending in a door which probably leads to the kitchen.
LINDA
Curiouser and curiouser.
ROB
No shit.
JAKE aims the flashlight down the hall, and notices the door. It is slightly open.
JAKE
Come on.
JAKE walks over to the door, followed by ROB and LINDA. He eases the door open, and it swings freely with a soft creak. The inside is darker than the dining room, with the flashlight revealing little else than glimpses of a stained table and floor. JAKE gives up and begins scanning the wall with the light, hoping to find a light switch.
ROB
The power's probably been out for decades.
JAKE finds a switch and flips it. Nothing happens.
JAKE
Damn.
ROB
Hang on.
ROB leaves the room, heading out of the dining room. JAKE and LINDA start after him.
JAKE
Where are you going?
ROB
Just stay there. I'll be back in a second.
JAKE and LINDA glance at each other, and sit down.
INT.MANSION.NIGHT
SIMON and JENNIFER are exploring a different room. This one is a large bedroom, with a large, canopy bed. There are some paintings on the walls, but the room is largely empty. This does not deter SIMON, who rummages through a dresser, finding nothing.
SIMON
I swear there's gold around here.
JENNIFER
We should probably get back. Start a fire or something. We'll have to get the sleeping bags and stuff out of the van.
SIMON
We could sleep here.
JENNIFER raises her eyebrows and looks at SIMON, and he realizes what he has said.
SIMON
I meant-
JENNIFER laughs.
JENNIFER
I know. Come on.
SIMON
No, let's see if there's another way down.
SIMON walks through a doorway into the next room, and JENNIFER pauses for a moment, then follows.
INT.MANSION.NIGHT
JAKE and LINDA are sitting in the dining room as ROB returns from outside, with a gas can and a large rag. He sets down the gas can and inspects the chairs.
JAKE
What are you doing?
ROB snaps off the leg of one of the chairs.
ROB
A torch.
ROB wraps the rag around the tip of the chair and ties it, then pours gasoline over the rag. Handing the torch to JAKE, he produces a book of matches and lights the torch.
ROB
All right.
JAKE moves back to the end of the hall and enters the room with the torch. ROB and LINDA follow him. The room can be seen clearer now, and it was once a very white kitchen, with old cooking implements scattered around. JAKE holds the torch higher and inspects the room. The room is dingy white, and there is a brown stain on the floor. JAKE notices the stain, and moves over to the other side of the table to inspect it.
JAKE
Oh.
The stain is splattered over the side of the table and pooled. It is obviously an old bloodstain. JAKE moves the torch along the stain, where it is smeared as if someone dragged their way through it.
JAKE
Holy shit. Rob!
ROB walks over, and sees the blood.
ROB
Is that?
JAKE
I think so.
ROB
It looks pretty old.
LINDA, noticing them, walks over. When she sees the bloodstain, she stops and her eyes widen.
LINDA
Did...did someone die here?
JAKE
I don't know.
ROB
It was probably an accident. Years ago. When I cut my leg last year, it bled all over the place.
JAKE
Why is it still here? Why didn't anyone clean it up?
ROB
The same reason no one's here now.
It is not a very comforting thought, and everyone falls silent.
JAKE
Where the fuck are Simon and Jen?
INT.MANSION.NIGHT
SIMON and JENNIFER have found a hall of books. Intrigued, SIMON begins scanning the shelves.
SIMON
Maybe there's a secret door.
JENNIFER
You aren't going to give this up, are you?
SIMON
Hello.
Spotting a distinct white-coloured book, SIMON pulls it from the shelf and leaps back. Nothing happens. Disappointed, SIMON examines the book itself. It is a Bible. Dejected, SIMON replaces the book.
SIMON
This whole place is one big tease.
JENNIFER
Maybe you're expecting too much. You can't expect an abandoned house to show you their secret passages on the first date.
SIMON
Why not? It's a strong, independent house. I want to find secret passages because I respect it as a house.
JENNIFER
You think you're so funny.
SIMON
Am I not?
JENNIFER
Not a bit.
SIMON
Come on. This house has to put out sooner or later. Maybe if we got it drunk...
SIMON moves off down the hallway. JENNIFER, laughing, follows him.
INT.MANSION.NIGHT
JAKE, LINDA and ROB walk up the stairs in the entrance hall where SIMON and JENNIFER left. The stairs creak and shift, and JAKE walks gingerly and slowly.
ROB
Simon! Jen!
JAKE
Ssh!
ROB
(incredulously)
Why?
JAKE
...I dunno. Never mind.
ROB
Hey, you guys! Where'd you go!
The echo bounces around the hall with an eerie emptiness. No reply is heard.
LINDA
Up here.
Approaching the open door leading off the stairs that SIMON and JENNIFER took, LINDA steps through, followed by JAKE and ROB. The study is the same as before. JAKE notices the broken glass.
JAKE
Simon was here.
Walking over to the case, JAKE pulls out a large bayonet in a sheath.
ROB
Hey, you guys-
A scream is heard, probably from JENNIFER. It echoes among the odd spaces of the house. ROB, JAKE and LINDA are silent for a moment after it dies away.
JAKE
Jen.
ROB
Oh shit.
JAKE
Jen!
JAKE drops the bayonet on the desk and dashes out the door, followed closely by ROB and LINDA. They move through the same way SIMON and JENNIFER came, looking around frantically and finding nothing.
They enter a long empty hall, shrouded in darkness. No one is there. JAKE stops and looks around.
ROB places an arm on his shoulder, and JAKE calms down.
ROB
It's fine, man. It's probably fine.
JAKE
Where the hell are they?
A monstrous shape looms out of the dark behind JAKE. Reaching out with a massive hand, it grasps JAKE on the other shoulder, who yells and leaps back.
JAKE
Ah! Shit!
The monstrous figure comes into the light. It is Simon, wearing a medieval helmet and gauntlets, and laughing.
JAKE
Motherfucker!
INT.MANSION.NIGHT
An unseen watcher moves through the house, up the stairs to the study. Faint traces of conversation can be heard, far away in the house. The watcher slows, examining the study, the broken doorway- finally settling on the bayonet.
INT.MANSION.NIGHT
JAKE is breathing hard and SIMON is still laughing.
JENNIFER emerges as well, smiling.
JAKE
Were you part of this?
JENNIFER
No. He pulled it on me too. Scared the shit out of me.
JAKE
Where did you get all that shit?
SIMON
There's a whole suit back there.
JAKE
Christ. You fucking scared me.
SIMON
Come on, I wanna put the rest on.
ROB
Hold on, fuck. We found something.
SIMON
So did I. Come on.
JAKE
Simon, hold the fuck on!
SIMON
What happened? Where's Linda?
A long, terrifying scream is heard. There is no doubt- this one is genuine. It lasts for a second, and suddenly cuts out with gruesome finality.
SIMON
What the fuck?
ROB
Oh no.
Wordlessly, JAKE and ROB sprint back the way they came. The rooms are pitch black without the flashlight, and JAKE soon pulls away from the others in the confusion. LINDA can be heard screaming again, this time in a low, wounded groan.
JAKE
Linda!
ROB
Where are you?!
It is too dark to see. JAKE is gone. SIMON and JENNIFER are missing. The sounds of JAKE running can be heard, and then-
LINDA
Jake!
JAKE
I got you, motherfucker! I got-
LINDA
Jake!
There are no more sounds. ROB, SIMON and JENNIFER find each other somehow. SIMON has retrieved the flashlight.
SIMON
What the fuck. What the fuck.
ROB
Come on!
For a agonizing moment, they search for JAKE in the darkened rooms. Finally, they find him, sitting against a wall, his shirt covered in blood from a long slash on his chest.
ROB
Jake.
JENNIFER
Oh my god.
They gather around JAKE, who is hyperventilating.
ROB
Where's Linda?
JAKE does not reply.
ROB
Jake, where's Linda?
JAKE
She's gone.
ROB
Where.
JAKE
It took her.
ROB
Who was it?
JAKE
It took her.
The room is silent as a grave.
