A A A

I call you five times a day.

Repeating myself

With nothing new to say.

To you it is old.

But to me, it is new.

I get confused,

With things I say and do.

**

I have mood swings.

And even lose my things.

Where is this?

What did I do with that?

I keep retracing my steps.

Frequently having to back track.

**

Sometimes I don’t recognize

My thoughts, others or myself.

I need a little extra help.

I never know.

When I will have

A good or bad day.

Sometimes I am content.

Other times, I lose my way.

**

I become agitated.

And see things

That aren’t there.

I am losing my ability.

To do for myself

And need someone here.

**

I am scared.

More than you know.

I wish I was how

I used to be.

Instead I lose

Control of my emotions.

And rummage around

Till the day is done.

Searching frantically for an item.

Still finding none.

**

I swallow a daily pill.

To slow down the progression.

I am monitored and take it.

At my neurologist’s discretion.

They say there is no cure.

So please be sure I’m safe.

And don’t wander aimlessly

Out the door.

**

Doctors say I have Dementia.

It affects my judgment

And memory.

Help me make the most

Of all I can still be.

Keeping my mind active

Is the best thing

You can do for me.

**

I still want to laugh and have fun.

Not just sit there.

My life is not done.

Music, writing or gardening will do.

Anything I used to enjoy.

Or introduce me to something new.

**

Dementia is a disorder.

That affects the brain.

Because of it, I am not the same.

Please be patient and kind.

Especially when I forget at times.

**

Please don’t be annoyed with me.

Under all the frustrating

Things I say and do,

Is the same person

You once knew.

I am still in here.

With tons of life

And love to share.
