He used to say …
8/23/10
My Dad has the most ridiculous expressions…
He is a stoic and kind of a distant man.
Tall, blonde and athletic even at the age of 72.
A legend in his own mind – I always tell him.
He tells the same stories of glory days gone by each holiday
and I can complete the sentences even before he has completed his tall tales.
My mother always tells me I am just like him –
With a propensity for being a lead foot driver, a few varicose veins,
and an excellent jump shot.
I am not sure if this is a compliment or not …
When teaching me to drive he would say “shit or get off the pot”.
Meaning either turn now or don’t because it is a dangerous corner .
When facing adversity he would say “This will put hair on your chest”
I would respond with “ I am a girl I don’t want hair on my chest”.
His point of course is that difficulty will make you stronger in the end.
Instead of a hug or love you – he would ask “Did you check the oil?”
Instead of “How are you? “ I hand him a bag of assorted bagels .
It is not ideal – but at least he is there –
and there is some sense of
reassurance a child has when their parent is around ..
