I Knew At Once…
The older I get the less I know
At the middle of my years there are few things I know for sure
Among these are that death and taxes are inevitable,
A younger administrator will likely be perform my evaluation at work,
At least once a day someone will tell me to Fuck Off.
And my son will probably only contact me if he needs money.
My gray hairs will miraculously separate themselves and
stand alone from the rest of my hair as to not hide my age.
I will want to cry at least one time before the day is over – just because.

As a younger  version of myself I also knew early on that something was wrong
When  I turned five and the shine went out of my eyes never to return.
That lies can paralyze you as does fear and they did.
Secrets are rarely kept and promises usually are empty protestations with good intentions.
That freedom is as much of a state of mind as it is a lifestyle
I knew that my son was my true north and despite hardship I would not grow hard
but  would be resilient and have to bend and flow in order to show him how to do so..
That parents sometimes do not love, protect and comfort their children
And home is not always where the heart is …..
That you never know what will happen and you need to be open to the possibilities…
This much I know for sure….
