a little romance

It was just supposed to be a silly blind date.
It had been a while since I curled my hair and lined my eyes
in that violet hue that would bring out the green flecks.
I put some heels on and a skirt for the first time in so many years.
Blasted the “Sade” cd and sang off key …
Walked into the place as to be just a little early;
to make you just a little nervous-- as I sensed you were just a little too cocky.
I ordered a juice – as to have my wits about me and there you were.
The bluest of eyes , slightly unshaven and wrinkled with your specs slightly tilted
on your nose; as to remind me of a professor or artist of some sort.
I recall a smoky aroma that lingered about your form;
and I hate smoke but it did not bother me for some odd reason.
A poster boy for the Key West tourism office.
Like that kind of stray puppy that just needs a good bath .
You cleaned up good – as they say –when you wanted to.
We shared some tales and photos and then said goodbye
on the bench- you flirting and touching the curls at the base of
my neck- and me thinking “Who does he think he is?”
It was just supposed to be a silly date really.
He was supposed to be my practice session before really jumping back into the world.
It was really just a little adventure to him- another sweet nothing-
midnight call- a wrinkle in time…
Why is it that some just slide past you with a wink and a smile; while others -- get in ?
–into your cells and under your skin.
