My Mirror Images

It has been said that the people in your life are the reflection of where you are at any particular time. So, now as I am in the middle of my years I surround myself with a very small circle of friends. Those who I have known for decades. They have their degrees, children and accolades. Their place in the sun, daily runs to the store and plots of green to mow. Yes, we became our folks – in a way. My cohorts have had a need to achieve and surpass their previous generations. Yes, Virginia we are a fast food nation with Martha Stewart wanabes in the kitchen and perfectly manicured lawns. Volvo’s in the drive and illuminated wreaths upon the front entrance. My dearest friends have the capability to read between the lines and avoid these pitfalls of materialism.

They are the best and the brightest. They are those few who will sit by you but will not let you rest on the sidelines. They will tease you but never criticize; and with just a glance can read the tears in your eyes before they even touch your cheek. They encourage your best and bring out your light. They will sit and wait on those endless nights when he has left or your father becomes ill. They are smart, strong and can be still when called for. I have few possessions- but am rich in my alliances.

The reflections of my dear few make me grateful each day. I honor them in this way- and feel humbled by their truth. Their reflections are not rose colored but have the clarity of a cut diamond – as I am one in the rough. My mirrors remind me that I am strong, steady and tough. They know as do I – because you were born – you were always good enough.
