You have stared into the abyss-

Made up of forgotten dreams

half-thought wishes

and all the things you’ve ever let yourself want

but never, ever gotten.

And it has stared back

And laughed

Ripped you apart

And put you back together wrong

Bruised, battered

Hands on the wrong wrists

Attached to a body you’re not sure you recognize anymore.

And so, over time-

Slowly, carefully

You must relearn the shape of your body

Memorize the curve of bone

The stretch of muscle and skin

Learn how to use the thumbs on your new hands.

And although this body is different-

Bones heavier

Muscles too tense

Skin that never seems to settle right over it all-

You are not broken.
