I still remember when you told me.

I was standing at the counter,

cutting an apple

And you told me to sit down.

I refused, because

people always tell you to sit down

when they have bad news to tell you

And I thought

if I didn’t sit down

we could just stay trapped in this moment

when everything was whole

Before you took whatever was breaking you from

the inside out

and let it loose.

But you told me anyway

And now all I can remember is

a silence so loud it hurt

And the

 red

red apple

against the cold white counter.
