Something so intangible shouldn't have such a weight behind it.

I’ve drawn the line in the sand,

again

  and again

and again

But no matter how far back I move it

the water always washes it away.

Sometimes I feel like there’s a glass wall between you and I

But I can never tell if I’m trapped on the inside looking out

Or stuck on the outside begging to be let in.

Either way, I’m banging on the wall

screaming

pleading for you to see

that I’m falling apart.

But you never seem to notice.

People think silence is empty

but really it fills everything around it

seeps into the corners of the room

and drives itself between us.

And all I can hear in the silence are

the words we’ve never said to each other.

Something so intangible

shouldn’t have such a weight behind it.

Shouldn’t settle like mud in the spaces between us

leaving dirty streaks on everything

that I don’t think will ever come clean.

Shouldn’t freeze the blood in my veins, the walls of my heart

or force the breath from my lungs

like a blow to the stomach.

It’s like a constant noise that somehow fades into the background

but reversed,

a silence so overwhelming that it’s all I can hear, all I can feel

filling the hollows of my bones

ruining me from the inside out.
