Behind every heartbreaking fact, there is a hurting person.

**These poems are not about myself. They are about someone I am close to, and all of my poetry about abuse is dedicated to her.

"Every fifteen seconds, a woman is abused in the United States."

Every fifteen seconds.
One woman is beaten.
She is pummeled by fists so unforgiving,
they bruise her and break her.
She is a statistic.
It happens to so many...
the startling, nearly painful flash of her reality spinning out of control as her body prepares for impact.
Three, two, one.
She is screaming, crying.
She holds her arms up to stop the blows,
but they come still.
Her heart will surely burst with emotion-
she despises this man, for what he does to her, to her children.
but some insane part of her clings to the good part of him that is still there somewhere.
Underneath the angry eyes,
the unforgiving fists,
the mouth which calls her names.
The abuse is over.
In another fifteen seconds,
another woman will be beaten like she was-
will be forced to taste her own blood.
She sinks into a corner.
No one else should ever feel this.
Every fifteen seconds.
