The phone rang once, twice, then again, until finally cutting to the answering machine. His familar, husky voice replaced the robot-like voice telling the directions to leave a message, like no one knew how to talk to a phone. "Hey. You've reached Kenzie's phone. Leave a message." The voicemail was short and sweet, just like him. "Hey." I tried to sound normal, but even to myself I sounded fake. "Um, I need to talk to you. Call me back. Soon. Love you, bye." As I set the phone on the countertop, I was trying despratly to stay above water, to keep my head. But at this moment, it seemed impossible. All of a sudden, I didn't have the force to keep it together, so in that moment, I let all of the feelings that I'd kept inside, swallow me hole, and drown me.
