i sat by the pool, with sunscreen slapped across my face while gazing across the lawn and there out of the shadows of the old water fountain, popped a little gray cane toad, sitting on the damp green grass, lapping up the moist air, it sat completly still almost asleep but fully aware ofhis surroundings.

looking down from a near by tree was a hungry looking magpie, with its eyes fixed on the toad waiting for the very best moment to strike. the taod lay on the grass lazily, the magpie seized the opportunity, and with a flap of its wings swooped down from the tall oak and snatched the taod up in its mouth. the bird had a look of determination in its eyes that could have swallowed the toad whole, but suddenly the look of determination was no more that a squak of panic as the bird came in for landing and spat the taod out with a nasty croak, it took a few seconds to recover before retreating back to its nest high above in the old oak tree.

the taod lay on the ground motionless, still unsertain of what had just accoured, slurging up from the glands on the back of the taod was throthy white poisen. the birds mouth had been covered in this white throthy stuff, from then after that bir was never seen again, and the other birds in the area never threatened the old toad again...
