Chapter 3

It had been days since my attack on the nobleman Esmeralda and I were to be married by the light of the new moon which was rapidly approaching. Since my assault many people have been showing up murdered all killed in the same fashion as the guards I had slain, it was not long until the locals looked to me as if I was to blame for these murders. I always kept control of my powers, of my inner demons so why now and how was it taking over I was unsure that it was even me until one morning, I awoke an hour before Esmeralda usually does and found myself covered in blood, I quickly got cleaned and changed into some clean garments before she awoke staring at me with her beautiful auburn eyes, “where are you off to kind sir” she asked me as I pulled on my boots I could only speak one word to her as I walked over and kissed her forehead “town.” In town I was met with glares and comments now made in languages I could barely understand some even uttered “monster” under their breath as I walked past. I made sure to arm myself with my blades before coming into town on this day for I had a terrible feeling, one that almost made my blood run cold. I stopped to pick up the farmers supplies while I was in but I could not find the store clerk in the front so I started to walk toward the back room when there he was nailed to the wall with his throat and chest ripped open. I immediately rushed out the front of the store yelling for help knowing I would be the one to be blamed and as they rushed in I slipped away before they could grab me and went right into the tavern. A mistake on my part perhaps for there were the men that I’m sure were causing me this uneasy feeling today two of them with eyes as black as night and a third whose shone more like pearl. Each carried a fairly decent rapier on one hip and a parrying dagger on the other but the man with the pearl eyes carried something different from the other two his dagger had the same symbol as the trinket I wore. They must be connected but how am I going to figure out what they are I thought to myself as the two with eyes of coal stood and stepped in my direction. “You boys don’t want to do that” is all I said as I reached my hand to the hilt of my blade. The only thing I could think of was I didn’t want it to be in here too many innocents around. I backed up slowly heading out the tavern door never taking my eyes off the three of them although the man with the pearl eyes never moved. I felt hand grab for me and pull me outside onto the ground as I was surrounded by guards and peasants accusing me of murder. I saw a smile come across the faces of the two with eyes of coal and then they simply vanished. I had to break free I had to get to Esmeralda, a couple well place throws as I picked up some guards and I had a clear path to run. As I made my way toward the farmhouse an all too familiar odor hung in the air like a black cloud, that of death and it was coming from home. The closer I got the stronger the smell until I saw what horror lie ahead, animals mutilated and the farmers body laid there with a well place blade right through his chest and worse of all his head was gone. I yelled for my Esmeralda and heard nothing in return and I waited for the worse as I headed inside. Inside I found no one, no Esmeralda anywhere, they must have taken her to get to me was my only thought as I looked out the window and seen a crowd heading toward me, everyone screaming monster and demanding my blood. I waited for the crowd pleading with them telling them I did not do this monstrosity, but my pleas fell upon deaf ears for they would not listen to me as they started pelting me with stones, so I turned to flee. When I was a safe distance away I turned to watch them set the bodies and the farmhouse ablaze making sure that they burn any evidence of my arrival hoping it would appease the gods. A wing beat and a hiss from behind made me spin quickly and catch the throat of a chimera, well one of the throats. Looking at them and squeezing the life out of the serpent I listened to their thoughts telling me that Esmeralda was a prisoner of Chaos and would be taking through the realms into the depths and that if I followed I would be disposed of quickly. I grew tired of their thoughts as I squeezed the life out of the serpent head and use my blade to dispatch the two others before it knew what was happening. I knew not where my Esmeralda was but I knew the directions to take and also that this would be the last time I say my beloved Midgardh for I now had to travel to the port of Skatyrnir. My journey would take me beyond Midgardh to the realm of the Giants, the realm known as Jotunheim.
