I was asked to write an essay on a topic called growing up. I decided to make it a little bit more funny and less essay-ish. Enjoy it. It's good to read it to children...they will understand me.

Growing up isn’t easy. No, seriously; it’s not easy at all. One thinks that the world of a child is a colorful world full of laughter and joy. As if! Oh, don’t get me wrong; I was a very happy child for the majority of the time…the only part that made me sad was middle school, but who has fond memories of that time? Anyway, as I was saying, growing up isn’t easy. First of all, think of the world from the point of view of a child. Well? I guess most of us forgot what it was like; allow me to remind you. Everything was big and scary. When you are four or five we have a very low vision of the world. Well, we only see at our eye level and mostly it’s above the knee of everybody we are with until we are forced to look up, and that’s how major future back and neck pains have started. For years we are forced to look up and it involved major neck straining unless the adult was so thoughtful of kneeling down to our level… it rarely happened. Second, the pain we had to go through when we were children. I mean physical pain. No, I don’t mean abuse or flogging, I am talking about all those pinching of our cheeks especially for those pudgy little people. How ants and grandmas loved to pinch our cheek…just one if we were lucky; both if we were really down with luck. Just imagine or remember those major holidays or family reunions when grannies and anties were all there!!! Talk about abuse! By the end of the day, your face was swollen. Then they would ask themselves why the child ran away every time he/she saw them. Mommy was always ready with the so commonly known excuse, “He’s such a shy boy” or “girl.” Remember that? Now, it wasn’t only pain we had to go through when we were growing up, but also harassment. Yep! What type? The kisses, of course! What else? A crime scene unit would have had a heck of a time swabbing DNA out of our round faces when we were little. Then another major job matching all that DNA to those at the party. Good luck! What’s about all that slobbering kisses? Isn’t a kiss enough? One cheek one peck and be done? Why smooching a little child so much? Go figure! But I guess everybody remembers quickly passing a hand over the cheek to remove the slobber. Yuk! Now I don’t know if it was more smooching or pinching or both or which one came first. I think those are the memories we try not to have. Indeed, growing up has its perks but it’s not an easy job. I guess I brought back memories long gone, but I am sure some of you will be nodding while reading, and, if you read this short essay with your child, he or she might actually remind you that history repeats itself since they are living the same situation. If there is one thing that will never change…it’s growing up.
