Belated Blues,(Daddy, I Understand)

Never, ever thought that I would be the one

to shake hands and say, "Keep the change."

Find my way to the very last car,

rear seat of an always late train;

Sip softly on a quiet wine,

watch the sun remove her flames;

Turn your letter over in my pocket,

feel  good-bye addressed to my name;

I got a ticket westbound to somewhere,

but especially nowhere tonight;

I tossed a coin to find a way,

to believe I could be right;

But like a road, a coin has two sides,

Mine fell in the eastbound lane;

Never, ever thought that I would be the one

to shake hands and say, "Keep the change."
