They told her the news, and she took it surprisingly well. She didn’t even flinch when they told her that she was to start a on her own in this country -- the one they were leaving. (Of course, they’ll give her living expenses, plenty of that. It was one of the only things they could give her. Besides a roof over her head and an education at an elite school.) Staying in a place for too long was never their thing (“oh what a dreary thought!”).

She watched as they packed up their things, unflinching and fixated. The bags, the shoes, the clothes -- everything that made her feel like they were there. That they cared. I think she even waved goodbye as they took off with their bags. As she stood there, a smile plastered on her face, and died a little inside.
