this is an essay that won me tenth place

A Vietnam Hero

My personal hero is not only my hero, but a hero for others too. My hero is my grandfather. My grandfather is 64 years old. He has helped me and many other people, and they do not even know it. My grandfather was in the Navy from 1964-1969 and spent the last 18 months (1968-1969) in the Vietnam War. His position was a Hospital Corpsman. In December of 1964 through February of 1965 he went to boot camp in San Diego, California. March 1965 through July he attended Hospital Corps School. After that he went to US Naval Hospital from August 1965 through July 1968 in Charleston, South Carolina. He was helping people he did not know, all this time. Not only did he help others, but he helped me the most.
It was about two years ago when I started to get in fights with my mom, grandmother, and friends. I used to go to his garage and talk to him about my problems. He would not only listen, but he also helped me understand, and I realized that did not see this before. This act of kindness made me realize who I was, and what I had to do if I wanted to fix my problems. My grandfather once said, “Life is not what you make it there are twists and turns, like a puzzle you must piece together yourself”. When he told me this I started to change my way of thinking, which also helped me help my friends. Still to this very day he cheers me up and helps me when I need it.
A few months ago my grandfather had to get an operation on his hand. The hospital said that he would be home in two days, but when he did not show up after two days I got worried. I asked my parents what happened and when I heard “the Staff Infection” I started to cry. I knew from prior knowledge that not many people survived from Staff Infection. I ended up seeing him four days after operation with suction tubes on him. I have a very lucky grandfather because he survived from the Staff Infection. That is another reason I love my hero so much because whatever somebody throws at him he will try to get through it.
My personal hero has undergone many of other operations. I can see that there will be many more operations to come, and I hope he lives through each. My grandfather currently works at CareTech Solutions he is a Network Technician. I hope people will see what I see in him, and will pray he can stay just a little longer to help me and others who really can use it. To my grandfather, my hero, my role model, and my helping hand.
