It was Friday 13th most unlucky day in the life of Vasudha. She was officer in all women’s branch of the bank. On that day the bank’s auditor visited the branch for verification of cash. The counting of cash was commenced immediately. When the counting was over, auditor noticed that there was a shortage in the cash. The safe was operated jointly by Vasudha and head cashier Anita.  Manjula was the attender in the cash department. She came out of the strong room for some other work and told another attender about the shortage of cash. The message was passed on one by one.  Some staff members out of curiosity went near the main door of the strong room. The grilled door was closed.  Staff members can see what was going on inside.  Auditor requested them not to disturb and go back to their seats.
The branch manager, who was aware of the developments didn’t come outside from her chamber.  Being a head of the branch, it was her duty to call both the joint custodians and conduct an enquiry. Her attitude was not appreciated by the staff.  The whole cash was counted number of times. Narmada was another senior officer above the level of Vasudha.  She was surprised to know the shortage of cash in the safe. Just two days before the audit, Narmada had checked the cash and it was perfectly tallied. By virtue of her long experience in cash division went inside the strong room for recounting. She adopted her own cross check method of counting. Finally, she confirmed the same shortage. The shortage of cash was adjusted equally by the joint custodians on the same day.
Narmada discussed with the auditor about the possibilities of mishap.
“Sir, in the strong room the entry is only for three persons. They are two joint custodians and one attender. According to my opinion, Anita might have pocketed the cash using her tricks.  She is expert in diverting the attention of Vasudha. You know the physical cash is handled only by Anita with the help of Manjula.  There is no chance of suspecting Vasudha based on her honesty and integrity. My firm assumption is Anita and Manjula were collided in the crime.” Said Narmada
Narmada called Vasudha for discussion about the issue in the presence of auditor.
“Vasudha, can you tell me how it was happened?” asked auditor
“Sir, I tried to recollect the happenings. According to my strong conviction, the mischief was done at the closing time on previous day of the audit. I was watching carefully holding the register and verifying the cash with each denominations.  At the same time, Staff Union leader Ratna asked irrelevant questions to me from outside only to divert my attention. I requested her not to disturb me.  At the same time, I had to open the grill door to handover one register outside.  While closing the grill door and locking inside one of my right leg finger got sever pain. Blood was flowing out. I closed my eyes for few seconds. During this time, Anita might have played mischief with the help of Manjula. I cannot prove this, due to the absence of evidence.” told Vasudha
“I am also doubtful about the faithfulness of Anita, Manjula and Ratna. Their service records speak lot about their misdeeds done earlier. In my opinion, all these three are untrustworthy persons. I think Ratna had deliberately engaged Vasudha in unnecessary talk with a sole intention of diverting intention, when Anita and Manjula were inside. With all this developments, in the absence of proper evidence, it is difficult to book them.Vasudha, auditor is a friend of mine. I told him about you. He assured me to help you. He even told me you are innocent.” Said Narmada
The auditor contacted his boss at Head Office and reported the matter in detail. He requested the boss not to drag the issue further and close it after the concerned staff make good of the amount. Luckily, the boss at the head office considered his request.  The auditor continued discussion with Vasudha and Narmada to know more about the deceitful persons.
“Vasudha, do you know these manipulators’ naturally cultivate the habit of telling lie and playing dirty games. If you have such people in the office, God only should save you. It will be nothing but a road to hell. You must be very careful when working with such persons.” Said auditor
“Sir, I will keep it in my mind, while dealing such persons.” Replied Vasudha
Narmada intervened and said, “Out of my vast experience, I observe the special qualities in manipulators’. They always pretend themselves as victims to gain sympathy from others. Being weak, they show extra care and affection to others. They never become aggressive. Such people are more expert in brain washing.”
Vasudha added her experience with such deceitful people.
“Sir, these people mindset always works towards destruction for their personal gain. They are waiting for the opportunity to strike. Anita is expert in acting as an honest and faithful woman. She keeps the daily accounts neatly and explains everything in detail.  Once she gain confidence then start doing her shameful business. These are only observation made by me based on her behavior.” Said Vasudha
Most of the staff members told that Anita, Manjula and Ratna, were involved in the crime. These trios had planned long before and waiting for an opportune time. Their modus operandi was dangerous. Vasudha met Anita and Ratna on separate occasions after a long time.  Anita blamed Ratna and Ratna blamed Anita. Both expressed sympathy towards Vasudha. It was clear from their statements that both were equally responsible for the crime. The culprits could not be booked in the absence of evidence even after so many years. Vasudha became a victim and lost the money for no fault of her. Anita and her colleagues earned illegal money by adopting foul means. Vasudha learnt a good lesson, ‘Protect you from liars and deceivers.’
