Ursula Le Guin based this book on a wizard, known as Sparrowhawk… A Wizard of Earthsea is a fabulous fantasy book written quite a few years ago.
There are many fabulous characters, apart from Sparrowhawk, including Jasper, a fellow school mate on Roke, island of the Wizards. There are also many other people who are not so important, like two castaways living on an island the size of my bedroom! The second most important character is the "Shade". This callous entity is just a shape, as opposed to a real human. When touched by its hands, all the life and energy is sucked out of you and it uses the body as its own.

Sparrowhawk begins as the son of a village-witch ( a very weak witch who relies on herbs) , and so when he travels to Roke and the school of wizards to become one, he already has a sense of magic. After a huge end-of-term party, Sparrowhawk challenges Jasper to a duel and half way through he accidentally releases a deadly Shade into the world.  The book is about him searching and eventually killing the Shade.

I loved this book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy quests and stories which give you plenty of detail about the odyssey he performed.
