The book the butterfly lion is by Michael Morpurgo. It was first published in 1996. Michael Morpurgo  said that this is one of his favourite books that he has written. He was born on the 5th October in 1943 and was 71 when he died. Interestingly he isn’t just a book author, he is also a poet, playwright and a librettist. He loved writing books. He was educated in schools in London, Devon, Essex and Kent.

In this book there is a boy and he runs away from a boarding  school in Wiltshire. He meets an old women called Millie, and she tells him a story of Bertie and the butterfly lion. The book was about Bertie and he rescued a white lion cub, but sadly he was forced to part with it when he went to a boarding school and he had to sell the lion to a circus. And then Bertie wants to get the lion back. When he was at the boarding school he sneaked out of school everyday and became best friends with the young Millie.

Later when fighting in the First World War, Bertie was reunited with the lion. He marries Millie and brings the little lion back to England, and then they lived happily together for many years. Sadly, after a couple of years, the lion died and when the lion died, Bertie and Millie wanted to have all the memories of the lion so they carved a lion out of chalk in the hillside.

After being told the story, Michael returns to school. He finds a plague commemorating Bertie’s heroic acts in the war, and finds out by his teacher that Millie died a couple of months after Bertie. After school, Michael goes back to the house, finding it deserted.

And then he heard a voice of Millie’s telling him to look after the lion.
