There was a boy who was bound to the Ruler of the Underworld. A boy who made a promise in a filed of Midnight flowers to a girl who was crying. It infuriated her that her own kind could hurt her; and he asked her, “Why don’t you smile?”
She looked up, annoyed at the small boy who dared to question her, but when she saw interest and honesty in those beautiful blue eyes; she answered, “I have no reason to smile.” she looked back down and wiped her runny nose with the edge of her beautiful black laced dress.
She felt both of his warm calloused human hands on both of her fevered flushed cheeks and lifted her eyes to his level. “Yes, you do.” the boy said, but there was still doubt in the eyes of the girl, a boy so young and so small being able to notice and understand her was incredible. It amazed her old soul.
“How do you know?” the Ruler of the Underworld asked in a quivering voice.
He grabbed both of her hands and helped her off of the ground, “I just do.” he looked at her sideways and smiled at her frowning lips. He bent down to her ear level and whispered. “Because you have me.” and kissed her on cheek. She looked up to find him blushing; her own heart begun to warm itself. He saw her for who she was, and knew exactly what she was. She was fragile, but strong; careless but free. And the boy knew, that from that day to the next, he will stay by her side for as long as he lives.
And so he made a promise; a promise that will never die, a promise that will keep the both of them together. He took her pinky finger entwined in his and said, “I promise to never leave your side. I promise to be there always.”
The ground beneath their feet shook as the promise was made and sealed; the boy and the girl hugged each other and played in the field of Midnight Flowers.
One day they will be put to the test of loyalty...and love.
That day could be today...or twelve years from now.
