Aidan had always had a weak immune system. He had been like this since he was born and his death had almost happened on many occasions. He went to school for a while but when high school started his condition got a lot worse and he had to leave school.
He took online classes and had a tutor hired by his overprotective mother. He was only allowed out of his dark room one day out of the week except for when he has to go to the bathroom and was
allowed outside for only four hours out of that day.
His friends had all abandoned him. I was all he had left now, me being his girlfriend. I’m sorry I guess I really haven’t properly introduced myself, I’m Rachel. I’m five foot six and everyone says
I’m really thin. I have natural blond hair that falls down to my waist. It has some light blue streaks scattered throughout my hair which Aidan actually said I should get.
My eyes are brown some days, other days they are brown, and very rarely they are brown. My skin is quite pale, because I usually hang around with Aidan at his home. I’m in eleventh grade and I’ve
been going out with Aidan since seventh.
I suppose I should describe Aidan also. He has dark brown hair that his mother makes him keep cut short. His eyes are a pale blue and are what I first fell for. He is even skinnier than I am
because of his health. He’s in eleventh grade as well and his face lights up whenever I come to see him after school.
He’s coming back now from the bathroom so here is where this story shall continue from.......
GUILTY WISH
“Hey welcome back.” I say as Aidan enters the dark room, closing off the light which came from the hallway. “Are you feeling any better? Is that medicine helping you at all?” I ask hopefully.
“I don’t think so, in fact I think...” He stops mid-sentence with a massive fit of coughing. “It’s making it worse.” He finishes when he can finally speak again. I reach out with my right hand and
rest it on his shoulder.
“Here you should rest.” I whisper and sit back on his bed. He lies down and rests his head in my lap. I place my hand on top of his head and gently pet him. “I love you.” I whisper.
“Why do you love me?” He asks and I stop for a moment. “What could you possibly love about me? Do you just feel pity?” He questions. I shake my head, even though I know he can’t see that.
“There is no pity from me and I love you for you. You are my everything and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I would have fallen for you even if you had been in the best health, nothing would
change how I feel.” I whisper to him and feel atmosphere lighten.
“I’m glad, because I love you way too much and can’t deal with the thought of you pitying me. I will love you forever.” He says quietly and drifts off into sleep leaving me alone. I sigh and look
at the clock. It reads five pm and I know I have to leave to get to my job.
“I’ll be back over tomorrow after school to take you out. I’ll let you choose where you want to go.” I whisper knowing there will be no response. I gently lift his head and slide away from him,
placing a pillow beneath his head. I lay the blanket over him and leave the room.
“I’ll be back tomorrow Mrs. Riley to take him out.” I say as I walk towards the door. I wait for her to respond because she always does.
“Of course you will. You are always back. You take my son outside where he can get even sicker. You’re what is killing him, go die bitch.” She says coldly to me. I’m used to it so I just pull on my
shoes and leave.
I come back the next day and Aidan is already waiting for me at the door. He has a smile on his face and wraps me in a warm hug when I get to the door. He motions for me to come inside and I follow
him to his kitchen.
“Can we eat dinner here and then go out? I want to be able to see the stars and the moon tonight. Please?” He asks and I can’t say no. I nod my head and he smiles. “Ok then sit down my mom is
making pasta.” He says which follows by a cough.
****************************
“Thanks for the dinner mom. We’re going to be going now. I promise I’ll be home within the next couple hours, bye.” He says after we finish eating. He grabs my hand and leads me out the door. He
doesn’t say anything as he walks towards the park, one of our favorite places.
We find an empty park bench and sit down. I lean against Aidan once he sits down. Something feels strange though. Usually he wants to be out in the sun because of the constant darkness of his
room.
“You probably wonder why we are out here tonight. I just felt like it, there is no huge story behind it.” He says and I can’t help but look up. I see something which makes my face light up. Aidan
smiles. “What is it?” He asks.
“A shooting star! Make a wish Aidan.” I say and I start to make my own. I stop because of the sudden frown that runs across Aidan’s face. “What?” I ask him quietly.
“Wishes are stupid!” He snaps. “How can you believe they would come true? If wishes were real the world wouldn’t be like it is, people wouldn’t be the same. I have always wished for a normal life!
ALWAYS! That never came true!” He is seething now and it scares me.
“Sometimes I wish I would just die. Yeah...” He whispers. His eyes close and then open a few moments later. He is smiling at me; it’s a really sad smile.
“What did you just do?” I ask, panic and uneasiness rising with each breath. “Did you just make a wish?” I ask quietly.
“Yes I did and hopefully you will know what I wished for soon.” He whispers and lays a kiss on my lips. He pushes himself away much too soon and pulls me into a tight hug. “I love you.” He mumbles
into my ear.
“I love you too.” I whisper breathlessly. He smiles and we begin to walk back to his house. “Good night.” I call as he opens his door. He whispers the same and then he shuts the door behind
himself.
****************************
I knock on the door, a smile on my face. I ran a little late today, it’s already seven pm. It doesn’t matter though, I know Aidan will understand. Mrs. Riley opens the door and my smile fades.
“What’s wrong Mrs. Riley? Why are you crying?” I ask, she never is like this. She sobs after looking at me and grabs my wrist, pulling me inside.
“Last night Aidan died. He left a note but I didn’t read it, it’s addressed to you! Why would he write a note to you but not me? How could he have known he would die?!” She yells and shoves the
note into my hand. She then pushes me right back out the door and slams it behind me.
Tears are in my eyes as I open the note. I begin to read it:
Dear Rachel,
I know I told you this but I will tell you again. I wanted to die. Please don’t think that I regret my decision. I honestly don’t, but I do regret not being able to be with you. I don’t want you
going off to kill yourself either. Please move on. You were always my angel, now I’ll be yours. Love, Aidan
I sit down right where I am and cry. “Why did you have to do that? Why did you wish for this?” I sob. I sit here for two to three hours just crying and yelling why.
I finally get up and begin to walk home. I walk the sidewalks and stop when there is a red light. I look up to the sky and I see it. “A shooting star!” I yell and I make my wish. “Please let me be
with Aidan again. Let me be with him.” I whisper over and over.
I look down and I see him! He’s across the street. I could recognize the back of his head anywhere. Mrs. Riley must have lied! I race out into the ongoing traffic to reach him. I keep running even
when I hear the horn of the tractor trailer beating in my ear.
The last thing I feel is the pain of being crushed. The last thing I see is that head turning around. That head is not the boy, no, the man which I had known.
Be careful what you wish for……
A/N: My friend who is an AMAZING drawer is going to be making this into a comic ^ ^ When she finishes it I will definitely post a link. That's
just something to look forward to(I know I'm looking forward to it).
