Within one forest, between its trees,

Old tales echo of a Thing in sleep.

Beware the ground where noises drown

For beasts know well what dwells beneath.

A troupe of bandits with stolen goods

Once, in revel, had crossed those woods.

They marched along in roaring song

And made their camp where no man should.

Late in the night, the robbers lay,

Their bellies full from a merry day.

The trees would moan a lulling drone

Yet could not keep the Thing at bay.

The men awoke from pleasant dreams

To shadows that flowed like coiled streams.

Long arms rose in countless droves

And dragged them down in muffled screams.

Where they stood, they stood no longer,

Having been fed to an ancient hunger.

Its taste then sated, the Thing abated,

Recoiling back to its depths to slumber.
