What lies behind a person?

~~One girl is in a city
Another, on a farm
Each stares blankly at a mirror
Seeing what lies behind.

The first, glances into her sea tinted eyes
And watches as amber flecked curls tumble down her back
The most lavished skirt and blouse
Wrap tightly around her shoulders, and prominent waist

Her full, salmon flushed lips,
And rose kissed cheeks
Are curled into a sneer
For anyone she meets

For the second, beauty is not her feature
As she watches the bulky girl in the mirror
The only thing protruding in the eye
Is the piercing pair of jade stone’s in the folds of her eyelids

But, through her body you could see
Even in the depths of her pale, dry lips
Even through the dull like glow from her flat head of straw
A smile.

So, what is really important?
Which person is better to you?
The one is beautiful to the naked eye?
Or the one who has beauty, which lies behind?

An interesting question. I think there actually is not a real answer to it because you don't know what the first person is like. Is she kindhearted or not? It's a good question that gives the poem more meaning.

I agree that this a trick question, I try and not judge people so I like both girls.

I'm not sure which girl I'd pick here. They both seem like wonderful girls:) I think that a person's personality, what's inside, is much more important than what a person wears, to answer the first question. An interesting poem; I like it! It makes a person think. Thanks for sharing, Maggie:)

This was a very nice;y written poem and a very good question as well. I think beauty is what lies inside not what is on the outside and besides if that is how any girl sees themselves then they are beautiful as their self confidence will show and glow to the world. Beauty is not what you look like on the outside it is how you feel about yourself and how you are on the inside as you can be pretty or handsome but be a complete ass so never judge a book by it's cover.

It is very good poem, philosophical and flows quiet. I like it. Lee.

very well written, I love it. It flows nicely. I love the descriptions, something you don't see in a lot of poetry. I'm impressed by that alone. great job.

Maggie,

This is AMAZE! I honestly would like to have both in one(except as a boy not a girl!). But what really matters is what's on the inside.... Thank you for putting it out there!

Keep writing!
