A FACE IN THE DARK

Chapter-1

I recently shifted to the countryside. The house I bought was the last house I could think of. It was a fully-fledged bungalow, even with a swimming pool. My house was on a deserted highway road with forests on either side. One could even hear the howl of animals at night, which was kind of scary. I had gotten a job in the research firm of that area, which was about 15 km away from the house.

One Friday night, I had gotten home late, due to some work in my office. Electricity had been cut out and my house was not electrified as I had recently moved in. As I stood in the balcony to get some air, I heard a strange sound. It sounded like someone was moaning and groaning for help. My senses became alert as I tried to sense where the sound was coming from. I looked here and there, but found no one except the dark and shadowy trees of the forest. Then I saw something, and the thing I saw made me extremely terrified! I saw a man come out of the woods who was moaning in pain. He was brutally stabbed and was walking lamely. He was slowly approaching my house. My house was hardly 100 meters away from him. I was not sure whether he was looking at me or not, as the darkness made it impossible for me to see his face. I was very frightened at the site which laid before me. I didn't know what to do. Who had stabbed him? Is he in danger? Should I help him? A thousand thoughts ran in my mind as a light breeze brought me back into reality. As I looked down, he was gone. He was nowhere to be seen. I was confused and worried at the same time. Where had he gone? Is he ok? As my eyes were eagerly searching him down the street, my doorbell rang. A chill ran down my spine as I felt my heart was skipping beats! I was frozen. What should I do? Is he the stabbed man? Does he need my help? I decided to open the door. I tiptoed from my balcony to my hallway. Every step felt harder than before. It was like I didn't want to walk but I had to. I slowly went downstairs and heavy-heartedly walked towards the door. My hand trembled as I undid the latch and finally opened the door. To my surprise, there was no one! I was scared as hell. Is someone pranking me or someone really needs my help? With trembling body, I walked out from my house and shouted if someone needed my help. Dark road and eerie forests surrounded me. I could hear the sounds of some animals which made me even more scared. No one answered. I waited for some more time. No one. As I turned around still confused, I spotted a paper lying on the ground with the corner of my eye. I wanted to get out of there as fast as I could but the paper had stopped me from doing so. I walked towards the paper and picked it. I unfolded the paper as my eyes focused on the text written on it. My eyes widened as I read the text, "DON'T ENTER YOUR HOUSE". I dropped the paper in horror as I looked at my open door. All I could see was A FACE IN THE DARK…..
