Once upon a time

When I was a child

I played in a field

Where weeds grew wild.

To the world around

'Twas just a vacant field

But for me many hours

Of play it did yield.

Some days I'd pretend

It was a jungle, dark and deep

As through those tall weeds

I would stealthily creep.

Other days an enchanted forest

It would become for me

With pixies, fairies and elves

Behind each imaginary tree.

Sometimes witches and monsters

Were in my mind's eye's game

That I had to defeat

Before my lunchtime came.

Then one day they mowed the field

A building for to put in its place

I watched the builders day after day

With breaking heart and tear stained face.

My mother told me change must always come

And, oh so sadly, as I older grew

I saw in myself and the world around me

That her words had proved so grimly true.

Yes, both the world and I did truly change

As the passing years so quickly flew

But those dreams I'd had as a young child

Still dwelt in my heart, bright and true.

Spring is gone, and Summer too

I'm now past "majority's age"

And those dreams of Spring and Summer

Now fill the written page.
