From the first gusty cry as a baby draws breath...

From the first gusty cry as a baby draws breath,
It plays on the strings of your heart like a harp.
A damp, downy head and a small, puckered face,
Releases an arrow of love SO sharp!
Tiny hands and feet, waving to and fro,
As limbs begin to stretch and move freely so that they can grow!

The months fly by and gurgling smiles,
Play the heart more easily still.
A chubby little body growing stronger every day,
Already you wonder how - before this babe - you managed your days to fill!
Slowly, gappy grins give way to sharp and pearly teeth,
No one could guess these treasures have others hid beneath!

Rocking back and forth gives way to full steam ahead...
Suddenly - exploring is the only way to go!
Crawling, rolling, shuffling, achieves the self-same aim,
To get from here to there can be fast - or slow!
A gappy smile of satisfaction emerges as the goal is achieved,
"Look at ME - aren't I smart?  I KNEW I'd get here and I did!"

Face - a messy portrait of the most recent meal!
Chocolate covered fingers wriggle oh so near!
Independence is beginning, though it has to be encouraged...
It can still cause a parental choke in the throat, or a tiny tear!
Bath time's getting wetter, as stronger limbs thrash about,
A cheeky grin looks back over a shoulder, as a bare bum streaks away as fast as can be!

Baby days are giving way to toddler fun and exploration,
So many experiences waiting around each corner it SEEMS.
So LORD, please Protect this little one, wherever it may go,
Sailing on the sea of life - grant substance to sweet dreams.
Guardian angels set around...
And Speed the day when Jesus it has found!
