MY GRANDAD.

Bumping along in a big, old pram,
Looking over hedges, seeing a sheep and a ram.
Playing hide and seek in 'tepee' stooks of golden corn.
While the whole family helped with the harvest from early morn.
Sitting with my brother and cousins on Granny's front wall,
Waving flags, as a lady in black and red rode by,
Side-saddle on a horse so tall!
Waiting in the front room, one cold December night...
Seeing a red hood and white beard pass the window,
As we sat by the fire so bright!
Sitting on the back step on Sundays, happily shelling peas,
Music and voices on the radio, linking loved ones across the seas.
Mountains of sandwiches, salad and ham,
Peaches and cream - followed by cakes filled with jam!
Then... off to church to hear Grandad sing,
Such comfort and pleasure to many his voice did bring.
He'd share with me, in a saucer, his drink of tea,
Dip his bread into smoked kipper juices and butter, just for me!
Riding beside him in a big, old steam train,
The sun always shone on holiday - it never SEEMED to rain...
Holding my hand while we walked by the sea,
Eating our cornets, then building sandcastles for me.
Endlessly patient, lots and lots of fun,
A strong arm to cuddle me when my busy day was done!
Safe and secure under his roof,
In those days I never feared anyone's reproof.
He taught me to TRUST in The Saviour I now love so,
Listening to him sing "Jerusalem!" and "God So Loved The World!"
As the tears down his cheeks did flow...
A face cold as marble met the last kiss I gave,
As they took my Grandad to lay him in his grave...
