Once

There was a poet

With long brown hair

Trailing down her back

Free of care

Free of charge

She sang her poems

On the street corner

Night after Night

Once

There was a poet

Hoping

Hoping for someone

To leave a dollar in her hat

Hoping for applause

Clap clap clap

Watching the man

His foot goes

Tap tap tap

On the pavement

Across the way

He watches but says nothing

Every single day

Once

There was a poet

With sad brown eyes

Big and bright

Tears fell

She cried

When the man

Went away

For ever

For good

She never knew his name

Never will

But maybe

She should

Once

There was a poet

Who sang sang sang

Until he went away

And then

There was no hat

On the corner

Of the street

There was no man

Across the way

There was no poet

Who sang sang sang
