THE CONFESSIONAL

She was laying face down, the rough flagstones cold against her cheek.  A draft was making the pitch torches flicker, casting unearthly shadows against the walls of the dungeon.

They had come for her as she was crossing the common, dragging her off to their lair where they had stripped and beaten her, then dunked her head under water until she had almost drowned.

“CONFESS!”

Hands grabbed her ankles, dragging her across the floor, yanking her up and jamming her into the rickety chair, tying her arms and legs.

“CONFESS!”

The red hot pincers coming out of the brazier.

“STOP SCREAMING, MISTRESS, AND CONFESS!”

She felt the swirling, then the churning, where her stomach used to be. Felt it rising, bursting out of her wide open, snarling mouth. The widdershins spinning black cloud, solidifying and taking on form in front of the suddenly terrified inquisitors as He, who had soured their milk and blighted their crops, appeared.

On the edge of consciousness she heard the flapping of wings, the shrieking and then the ripping and crunching of bones. Hot blood splashed across her body.

She knew that when He had feasted He would return, making her whole again.

Footsteps on the stairs as the Watch tumbled into the room.

She heard more shrieking, ripping and tearing.

It never pays to disturb a Demon.

THE END
