I stretch words across my lipless tongue
to the vibration of the motor humming your disease.
She is quiet as she begins to undress,
revealing years of repression reflecting on me.
I lie my head back onto a softer suited crutch
and set my aimless touch to cruise control.
We compromise each others makeshift hearts
to mask the persistent bruising of our souls.
It’s dark in sight and mind,
though we keep on breathing to stay alive
as the rest of the world is dead to sleep.
I can’t help but notice Conor on the radio, singing a ballad from Neely O’Hara.
He’s telling me I’m not who I used to be.
I’m not who I used to be.
