A room. The walls are defined by a row of tables
(or chairs), forming a square. The tables at the
back are standing upright, tall enough to hide a
Within the room are two people, a man and a woman,
sitting on armchairs (or similar). They seem
older than they are.
There are a few decorative items scattered about,
and appliances, but none which require contact
outside the room.
Most importantly, road cones are in the centre of
the room, forming a circle, with something
important in the centre...
They sit in a bored silence. They have been like
this for some time.
After several moments...
Do you remember... ?
Oh, just a thought... I... No, nothing.
Please tell me.
I remember when... when... I opened that can of tinned
pears with the can opener.
This provokes a reaction from the woman.
So do I!
This is the most excited they’ve been in years.
Do you remember eating them?
So sweet. So juicy. What I’d do for...
He looks down, returning to bored despair.
The woman looks at her watch.
It’s time! The little hand is directly facing the 7!
That’s when you walk 5 laps around the chairs, isn’t
She takes a BOOK from under her chair.
Today’s paragraph... Let’s see...
She finds her place, and then begins reading.
"Despite this discordant and destitute conveyance, a
veil shalt be pulled from the wings, and the cones of
matter will signify the passing of-
What was that last bit?
Don’t interrupt me! I only have 2 lines left until the
paragraph ends - I want to savour them!
The cones of matter?
She glares at him, and continues reading silently.
The cones of matter...
His head slowly turns to the road cones in the
centre of the room.
After another few moments, the man pulls himself
up with a walking stick.
Be careful - what do you think you’re doing?
He hobbles over to the centre, behind the cones,
and looks into them, thoughtfully.
What do you see?
The man drops his walking stick.
Do you ever wonder if there is anything else?
Oh no, don’t start this again...
You said something similar several weeks ago. Or
months. About how you thought something... or-
She chuckles to herself.
-Someone... created us. Created this.
No, this is different. I was wondering what these
cones are for...
The woman looks at them. Properly. For the first
She gets to her feet, and runs over to join him.
I’ve never thought of that before!
I’ve NEVER thought of that before!
She realises something important, but keeps it to
herself for now.
They have no purpose. The can opened opens cans... Or
did, when we had one. The chairs are sat on... The
book provides entertainment - to an extent - but these?
Hm, you’re right.
She tries to pick one up. It won’t move.
It’s stuck. Maybe-
But then, what was the point of the can?
We ate the food.
But why? We don’t have to eat food - we’ve survived
for... for... a great deal of time without it!
It tasted... good.
How do you know what good is?
Their thoughts return to the cones. The man
begins circling them.
Have you ever been inside them?
No. I’ve never noticed them before.
Should I try it?
Perhaps we weren’t supposed to notice them.
Not supposed? That implies there’s something here to
tell us what to do. Look around you! What do you see?
A desk, and that book, and...
Exactly. Just us. We make the rules here.
I think you’re right.
She laughs, half nervously.
We can do what we like!
Slowly, man begins moving over the cone.
The woman watches him intensely.
He enters inside.
This is amazing! A new place! A new place I’ve never
ever been to!
What’s it like?
It’s magnificent. The ground is... soft. There’s this
furry stuff I’m standing on.
That’s the same as out here.
Yes, but this isn’t out there! It’s in here! Oh, but
He bends over. He picks up a bowl of fruit.
He jumps from the cones and into the room, taking
the bowl with him.
They both crowd around a table, where the man
places the bowl.
(as if he’s learning the names as he
Apples! Bananas! Oranges! Cherries!
I wonder what they taste like?
Let’s eat them!
They dive into the fruit. The woman picks up a
banana, and tries eating it.
The man grabs an apple, and looks at it with
This tastes disgusting!
Let me see?
She gives him the banana.
He holds it, and carefully, snaps it in half.
Look, see. The centre is softer. Try eating that.
Let’s eat our fruit at the same time.
They both take a bite-
Knock. Knock. Knock. Knock. Knock-
They drop their fruit in shock.
Neither can speak.
The knocking is coming from outside the room!
It’s coming from outside-
There is no outside! Just this room! This is it.
But I can hear it!
This room is all there’s ever been, and all there ever
will be. There is NOTHING else!
The back tables begin shaking.
They both cry out in fear.
What is this?
The world is ending. We ate the fruit. There was a
reason it was hidden within those cones!! We should
have left them!!!
Two of the upright tables begin moving
backwards. Once they are far back enough to be
past the tables’ legs next to them, they begin
moving sideways, creating an opening into the
Neither of them can speak.
Something walks out of the opening...
They huddle together...
A person wearing a white mask/veil walks out. It
isn’t detailed, but a plain, white mask. The
thing is clothed in only white, preferable wearing
a while cloak.
It stands there. Judging them.
Then, it holds up its hands and covers their
It then lets go.
They flop backwards to their respective chairs,
and then fall into them, before stiffening up.
The creature reveals a can of TINNED PEARS, and
places them on the desk.
It then picks up the bowl of fruit and places it
inside the cones.
The creature then walks backwards out of the room,
as the table close in front of it.
The WOMAN and MAN wake up, and go back to a bored
You were saying?
Um... Something about a banana?
What’s a banana?
I don’t know.
They sit in more silence.
